Sujan Molla, the Organizing Secretary of the Bandhabari Union Jubo Dal in Kotalipara Upazila, Gopalganj, is once again facing allegations of controversial conduct—following a previous expulsion for breaching party discipline and a subsequent reinstatement. Nazmul Molla, the proposed Office Secretary of the Union Jubo Dal, has also been implicated in the same incident. They are accused of constructing a dam across a government canal and detaining a young man for nearly five hours while posing as Detective Branch (DB) police officers, eventually extorting 10,000 Taka from him.
These allegations have sparked unease and criticism among local Jubo Dal leaders and activists. However, several party members claim that no visible organizational action has been taken regarding these accusations so far.
Multiple local Jubo Dal sources report that Sujan Molla was expelled from his post as Organizing Secretary of the Bandhabari Union Jubo Dal on February 24 of this year due to a breach of party discipline. The expulsion order was later withdrawn, and he was reinstated on April 4. Local activists allege that following his reinstatement, he once again leveraged his party influence to engage in various controversial activities.
Recently, allegations surfaced against Sujan Molla and Nazmul Molla regarding the construction of a dam across a government canal in the Tulatala area of Bandhabari Union.
Local resident Sarwar Hossain Molla said, “Upon returning from Dhaka, I learned that Sujan Molla, Nazmul Molla, and our Jalal Molla had carried out piling work to construct a dam across the government canal for fish farming.” The blocking of the government canal in this manner has triggered intense anger and criticism among the locals.
While admitting to the construction of the dam in the canal, Sujan Molla stated, “We own approximately 20 *bighas* of land adjacent to the canal, which usually remains fallow. The canal itself is also in an abandoned state. That is why we wanted to dam the area and bring the entire space under fish cultivation. However, blocking government land in this manner was not the right thing to do.” Meanwhile, allegations have surfaced against Sujan Molla and Nazmul Molla for detaining a young man named Rifat Biswas—while posing as DB (Detective Branch) police—and extorting money from him. Leaders from the Bandhabari Union Jubo Dal claim that Rifat was held for approximately five hours and forced to pay 10,000 Taka; they further claim that 5,000 Taka was later returned to his family.
Bachchu Howlader, who mediated the incident, said, “Around 10 PM, Rifat’s father informed me that his son had allegedly been detained by DB police. Upon arriving at the scene, I found no DB police; instead, Sujan Molla and a few others were holding the young man. I subsequently secured Rifat’s release in exchange for 10,000 Taka. As news of the incident spread in the area, I returned the money to Rifat’s family.”
However, Sujan Molla and Nazmul Molla have denied the allegation of impersonating DB police. They claim that Rifat was detained while in possession of drugs and was released after the matter was settled in consultation with locals.
These incidents have sparked unease and criticism among local leaders and activists of the Bandhabari Union Jubo Dal. Several leaders, speaking on condition of anonymity, alleged that such actions by specific individuals are tarnishing the organization’s overall image. They stated that the allegations against Sujan Molla and Nazmul Molla have been reported to senior leaders at the Upazila level.
Regarding this matter, Mannan Sheikh, Member Secretary of the Kotalipara Upazila Jubo Dal, said, “The allegations raised against Sujan Molla and Nazmul Molla will be discussed within the party forum. A decision regarding the matter will be taken following those discussions.”
