Allegations have surfaced regarding the felling of fruit trees by an opposing party in Kotalipara, Gopalganj.
Manmatha Sarkar, the owner of the trees, has filed a written complaint with the police station regarding the incident.
The incident took place in Rajapur village under Ramsil Union of the upazila.
On Tuesday (September 15), Manmatha Sarkar filed the complaint at Kotalipara Police Station, naming Binay Sarkar and Bishwajit Sarkar—who reside in the same homestead—as the accused. Police visited the scene on Thursday (September 17).
According to the complaint, on the morning of September 6, Binay Sarkar and Bishwajit Sarkar forcibly cut down two mango trees planted on Manmatha Sarkar’s land. It is alleged that when Manmatha Sarkar’s daughter-in-law, Babita Sarkar, attempted to stop them, she was assaulted and physically injured. The complaint further states that she was subjected to verbal abuse and various forms of intimidation and threats.
The complaint adds that although attempts were made to resolve the matter through a local settlement, the accused party refused to agree. The complainant expressed concern that this situation could lead to future altercations and serious incidents, such as murder or physical violence.
Binay Sarkar was not found at his home when a visit was made to seek his statement on the matter.
ASI Rakib of Kotalipara Police Station said, “We have investigated the incident on-site. Preliminary investigation has confirmed the veracity of the allegations. Efforts are underway to resolve the matter through a local settlement. If a settlement is not reached, further legal action will be taken based on the investigation.”
