A husband has been accused of beating his wife to death in Kalai, Joypurhat. His wife, Machuda Begum (27), died at Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital on Friday night after eight days of being treated in the hospital after being seriously injured by her husband. The deceased’s brother filed a murder case in the incident. After filing the case, the police arrested the accused husband that night and sent him to jail on Saturday afternoon.
The husband, Mehedi Hasan, is the son of the late Abdus Samad Pramanik of Harunja village in Ahmedabad union of Shapla upazila. The deceased housewife, Machuda Begum, is the daughter of the late Dilbar Mandal of Dashra Khapara in Khetlal upazila. This information was confirmed by Kalai police station OC Investigation Dipendra Nath Singh.
According to the case details, they got married about 15 years ago. They have a 13-year-old daughter in the family. Since the marriage, there had been constant quarrels between the husband and wife. In the meantime, they also got separated. A year after the separation, they got married again. Meanwhile, on the afternoon of August 14, when Machuda’s daughter was not at home, a quarrel broke out between the husband and wife. At one stage, he beat his wife severely. At that time, his wife Machuda Begum lost consciousness and was lying on the floor of the house in a seriously injured condition. Later, neighbors rescued her and first admitted her to Khetlal Upazila Health Complex. When her physical condition deteriorated, the doctor transferred her to Joypurhat District Modern Hospital. Since she was not there, she was transferred to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogra on the same day. Machuda died on Friday (August 21) night while undergoing treatment there.
The plaintiff in the case, Bashir Mondal, said, “My sister was tortured and killed. I want justice for my sister’s murder.”
Kalai Police Station OC Investigation Dipendra Nath Singh said, “She died while undergoing treatment at Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital. The deceased’s brother has filed a case. The deceased’s husband, Mehedi Hasan Shapla, was arrested from his own house that night. He was sent to jail through the court this afternoon.”
