Hospital The new building of Gaibandha General Hospital has not been commissioned even after 6 years of its completion. Due to bed and infrastructure shortage, patients have to receive treatment lying on the floor and balcony. Although the construction of the new building has been completed for a long time, the hospital authorities are struggling to provide treatment as it has not been commissioned. Patients and relatives who come for treatment have expressed their anger over this.
It is known that the activities of Gaibandha 250-bed General Hospital have been running on a two-story infrastructure with 50 beds for a long time. Although it is a 250-bed hospital, more than 400 patients suffering from various diseases are regularly admitted here and about 1200 to 1500 patients come to the outpatient department for services every day.
Since there is not enough space in this, the construction of a new 9-story and a 6-story building began in the hospital premises in 2018 to reduce the suffering of patients. This has filled the hearts of the locals with hope.
But even after 6 years of construction, patients are facing difficulties in coming for treatment as the new building has not been opened. Due to the lack of beds and space compared to the patients, patients have to sleep on the floor and verandah. Multiple patients with different diseases are forced to stay in the same bed. Medical services are being provided in a dirty environment due to the crowding of patients. The situation is the same in the outpatient department. Sick people are getting sicker when they come for medical services. Patients, relatives and locals have expressed their anger that the new building has not been opened for a long time.
Patient Abdul Hakim, who came for treatment, said that he has been admitted to the hospital for two days. Since he has not been given a bed, he is receiving treatment in any way by lying on the floor. It is not possible to lie here under the crowding of people.
The patient’s relative Phul Mia said that the hospital environment has become unsuitable for treatment due to the crowd of hundreds of people. Sick people are getting sicker when they come here. It is not possible to stay in the hospital due to the dirty environment and stench.
Gaibandha General Hospital Superintendent Dr. Md. Shahidullah said that not only the patients but also the doctors are facing difficulties in providing treatment in such an environment due to lack of buildings. Acknowledging the suffering of the patients, he assured to start treatment activities in the new building soon. On
June 7, 2018, the construction of the two buildings started at a cost of Tk 345.359 million, but the cost was increased to Tk 397 million. The completion period was 18 months.
