Construction work to upgrade the long-awaited Joydebpur–Pubail Road into a modern 60-foot-wide urban road has officially begun in Gazipur. The approximately 11-kilometre road is being developed in phases, with construction now underway on the section from Ichali Bridge to Pubail College Gate. Land acquisition for widening the remaining section from Joydebpur to Ichali Bridge is in its final stage.
The inauguration ceremony was held on Saturday (July 18), where Gazipur-5 Member of Parliament AKM Fazlul Haque Milon and Gazipur City Corporation Administrator Md. Shawkat Hossain Sarkar formally inaugurated the construction work and laid the foundation stone.
The project is being implemented by the Gazipur City Corporation under its road widening, drainage and footpath development programme. In addition to expanding the road to 60 feet, RCC drains and modern footpaths will also be constructed to improve urban connectivity and drainage.
According to project officials, land acquisition has already been completed for the Ichali Bridge–Pubail College Gate section, allowing full-scale construction to commence. Meanwhile, administrative procedures for acquiring land to widen the Joydebpur–Ichali Bridge section from 20 feet to 60 feet are nearing completion.
Speaking at the inauguration, MP AKM Fazlul Haque Milon said the road would play a vital role in improving transportation, promoting trade and industry, and enhancing access to education and healthcare across the region.
Gazipur City Corporation Administrator Md. Shawkat Hossain Sarkar said the project would be implemented with strict quality control and completed within the stipulated timeframe using durable construction materials.
Local residents expressed optimism that once the entire 11-kilometre road is widened, it will significantly ease traffic congestion and ensure faster, safer travel for hundreds of thousands of people in Pubail, Purbachal, Kaliganj, Ghorashal and surrounding areas. They also believe the project will boost industrial growth, trade and overall economic development in the region.
