A vagrant youth has been accused of raping an 11-year-old child by gagging her mouth and holding a pair of scissors to her throat in Shalla upazila of Sunamganj. Furthermore, an accomplice of the rapist recorded the video of the crime on a mobile phone. Following the incident, the victim’s father filed a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act with Shalla Police Station.
The accused are Md. Sufail Mia (20), a vagrant youth and son of Mohim Uddin, and his accomplice Sayek Mia (20), son of Nurul Haque. Both are residents of Markuli village under No. 02 Habibpur Union of Shalla upazila.
According to the case statement (Ejahar) and local sources, at around 11:00 AM on June 10, the victim went to the pond behind their house to look for their ducks. At that moment, the lurking culprit Sufail Mia grabbed the child from behind, gagged her mouth, and threatened to kill her if she screamed, holding scissors to her throat. At one stage, Sufail Mia forcibly raped the child. Directly assisting in this crime, his accomplice Sayek Mia recorded the entire incident on his mobile phone.
After the incident, the accused threatened the child with death if she disclosed the matter to anyone and left the spot. Out of social shame and fear for her life, the child initially kept the matter secret. However, noticing changes in her behavior later on, her mother questioned her. At that time, the girl broke down in tears and disclosed the details. Subsequently, the family members discussed the matter with local dignitaries and relatives before coming to the police station to file the case.
When contacted over the phone regarding this matter, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shalla Police Station, Md. Rokibuzzaman, stated that the prime accused, Sufail Mia, has been arrested.
A case has been registered under the relevant sections of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act (Case No. 08, GR-74). Police drives are underway to arrest the other accused. The victim is being sent to the hospital for a medical examination.
