BMU budget being prepared with the aim of building a healthy Bangladesh

The 119th meeting of the Finance Committee of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) was held today, June 17, 2026, at Shaheed Dr. Milton Hall under the chairmanship of the University Treasurer, Professor Dr. Nahrin Akhtar. It was informed in the meeting that the proposed budget of BMU for the financial year 2026-2027 is being prepared with the aim of building a healthy Bangladesh. Where priority will be given to healthcare, improvement of medical education, research and training. The mission and vision of this proposed budget are, “Excellence in service, world-class education and research should be visible. Privilege in healthcare should be the right of everyone. Cost reduction, monitoring, development of healthcare.” The proposed budget focuses on making BMU, an institution that operates 59 of its own departments and 55 affiliated medical colleges and institutes, a full-fledged research-oriented institution and improving its ranking to international standards.

The meeting discussed in detail the revised budget for 2025-2026, the proposed budget for the fiscal year 2026-2027, the development budget, and the introduction of new and effective initiatives that are very necessary for universities and hospitals. The meeting emphasized the need to formulate a transparent, accountable, and effective balanced budget. This time, the proposed budget is expected to be slightly more than one thousand crore taka compared to the last time. BMU Treasurer Professor Dr. Nahrin Akhtar presented the details of the revised and proposed budget. The revised and proposed budget will be approved and announced in the syndicate meeting to be held this month. BMU’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. FM Siddiqui was present at the meeting, moderated by BMU Director (Finance and Accounts) and Member Secretary of the Finance Committee, Khandaker Shafiqul Hasan, and provided valuable opinions and guidance. In the meeting, BMU’s Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) and Finance Committee Member Professor Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) and Finance Committee Member Professor Dr. Abul Kalam Azad, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Development) and Finance Committee Member Professor Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman Howlader, BMU Registrar and Finance Committee Member Professor Dr. Mostafa Kamal, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Finance Committee Member Professor Dr. Shamim Ahmed, Professor of the Department of Neurosurgery and Finance Committee Member Professor Dr. Md. Moududul Haque, Director of the Finance and Accounts Division of the University Grants Commission (Retired) Mr. Md. Rezaul Karim Howlader provided valuable opinions. In his speech as the chief guest, Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. FM Siddiqui said, the proposed budget for the financial year 2026-2027 has been presented with great clarity in today’s Finance Committee meeting and this budget will be presented for approval in the next Syndicate. Some issues should be added in this year’s budget that will be marked as milestones. Electronic Medical Record (EMR) is very important for a medical university, which is very important to introduce. The offices should be made paperless. As an effective initiative to make the hospital environment healthy and beautiful, the Hospital Management Committee and the engineering branch of the university should be made more effective and dynamic. The overall management of the university should be improved and dynamic. In order to ensure that the university’s elevator service and the accelerators of various buildings of the hospital are operational as required, those concerned should be brought under accountability to ensure their responsible role. The activities of the companies that are working with this university on the basis of contracts with the university must be brought under full monitoring in the interests of the patients and the university. The activities of various ongoing projects of Bangladesh Medical University will be brought under the scope of internal audit. The ultrasound service of this university and hospital will be expanded and coordinated in a planned manner to make it more accessible so as to reduce the suffering of patients. Keeping in view the current government’s national health budget, all departments of the university will have to come forward to develop this university and ensure better services to patients by taking innovative initiatives, adding advanced technology, introducing robotic surgery, and adding new innovations. Above all, such a management must be ensured in this university so that there is no scope for corruption or corruption is permanently stopped. In the meeting, BMU’s Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) and Finance Committee Member Professor Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) and Finance Committee Member Professor Dr. Abul Kalam Azad, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Development) and Finance Committee Member Professor Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman Howlader expressed their determination to start a new era by moving this university forward with honesty and corruption-free. To that end, they urged to conduct activities on the basis of a dynamic teamwork and gave importance to this university and hospital in carrying out activities in the interest of the country and its people, above personal interests. Additional Director (Finance and Accounts) Mr. Md. Masud Alam, Additional Director (Finance and Accounts) Mr. Nasir Uddin Bhuiyan, Additional Director (Finance and Accounts) Mr. Mohammad Badrul Huda, Assistant Director (Finance and Accounts) Mohammad Abu Nazir and others were present in the meeting. The meeting highlighted the progress, activities and income and expenditure of various projects in the development budget. In the field of research, the need for allocation from UGC for the research sector of BMU as a medical university with distinctive features by evaluating the need-based assessment was discussed with importance. In the proposed budget, provision has been made for allocation for medical journals, infection control, library and information sectors. BMU Director (Finance and Accounts) and Member Secretary of the Finance Committee, Khandaker Shafiqul Hasan, said that in the next proposed budget, arrangements have been made to purchase another much-needed linear accelerator machine to provide radiotherapy to cancer patients. The meeting also informed that such advanced and essential medical services, including liver transplantation and full-fledged bone marrow transplantation, must be implemented to save the lives of patients, and it is also important that this issue be mentioned in the proposed budget.
