A central seminar titled ‘Artificial Intelligence: A New Era in Radiology’ was held today, June 15, 2026 , at the A Block Auditorium of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) under the initiative of the Central Seminar Sub-Committee of the university. The learned speakers in the seminar opined that artificial intelligence is not an alternative to doctors in the future; rather, it will serve as an important aid in improving the quality of medical services, making quick decisions and opening new horizons of research. The contribution of ‘AI’ in radiology, an important branch of medical science, is undeniable. The Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh Medical University, Professor Dr. FM Siddiqui, was present as the chief guest at the seminar. The Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) of the university, Professor Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Development) Professor Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman Howlader, Treasurer Professor Dr. Nahrin Akhtar, Registrar Professor Dr. Md. Mostafa Kamal were present as special guests. In addition, Dean of the Faculty of Surgery, Professor Dr. Md. Ibrahim Siddique, delivered a valuable speech at the seminar. In his speech as the chief guest, Honorable Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh Medical University, Professor Dr. FM Siddiqui, mentioned Artificial Intelligence or AI as very important in overall healthcare, including medical science, and emphasized the preservation of quality and proprietary data. The keynote speaker at the seminar was Professor Dr. Mahbuba Shirin, Professor of the Department of Radiology and Imaging. In her presentation, she discussed in detail the current uses, potential, limitations, and future directions of artificial intelligence in radiology. As another speaker, Associate Professor Dr. Mahmud Hasan Mostafa Kamal, Department of Radiology and Imaging, presented his research paper titled “ Multimodal AI for Joint Lung Tumor Segmentation and Clinical Feature Prediction from CT Scans”. He highlighted the application and potential utility of multimodal artificial intelligence in lung tumor identification, segmentation and clinical feature prediction. The presentation explained how modern AI-based technology can be helpful in fast, accurate and effective disease diagnosis. The event was presided over by Professor of Virology Department and Chairman of the Central Seminar Sub-Committee, Professor Dr. Afzalun Nesa. The seminar was moderated by Assistant Professor of Medicine Department Dr. Khaled Mahbub Murshed (Mamun). The seminar was attended by esteemed deans of the university, departmental chairmen, teachers, doctors, researchers, postgraduate students and representatives of various departments. At the end of the event, a lively discussion and question-and-answer session was held among the participants, and emphasis was placed on the safe and effective use of artificial intelligence in healthcare.
