Maijdi is the heart of the district town, where thousands of people commute daily, but a large part of this main town has now become a garbage dump. Especially Noakhali Supermarket and its surrounding areas are now like an authorized dustbin station! Due to the extreme stench and dirty environment, the lives of local residents and pedestrians are now miserable.
The most alarming thing is that this pollution is not happening in a remote area, but right next to the city’s most important administrative and educational institutions. Right next to the Noakhali Supermarket are the District Election Office, the ACC (Anti-Corruption Commission) Office, the Relief and Disaster Management Department, the Police, and the KG School (where hundreds of young children commute every day).
The fact that a modern supermarket is surrounded by garbage and rubbish, and that important district and national level offices and educational institutions are located right next to it, is a stark reminder of the indifference and apathy of the administration. Thousands of people are forced to cross this area every day, wearing handkerchiefs, amidst the stench. School children and students are at serious health risk.
Not only the supermarket area, but the picture of the area south of the government circuit house, another important area of the city, is equally disappointing. There too, there is no care to clean up the garbage after throwing it. The air is heavy with the rotten stench of waste overflowing in the dustbins. The entire area seems to be in a state of neglect.
Who is responsible? The question is, environmental pollution cannot continue like this for years in the heart of a modern district city. Where officials from major offices like disaster management and anti-corruption departments commute daily, there has been intense anger among the conscious community about how this mismanagement can continue right before their eyes.
The common people are angry due to this mysterious silence of the municipality or the concerned authorities and the utter failure of waste management. The people of Noakhali from all walks of life are seeking strict intervention from the higher authorities to quickly remove this garbage and transform Maijdi city into a stench-free and healthy and livable city.
