Rangpur City Corporation has been accused of partially demolishing a building under construction at the ancestral home of the victim, 60-year-old Mahmuda Begum, by announcing a ridiculous unilateral verdict without investigation on the conspiracy allegations made by AFM Tariq Sarkar Atom in the Adarshpara Champatti area of the city.
According to local and government sources, in Ward No. 21 Adarshpara (Chamrapatti) area of Rangpur city, on June 4, Rangpur City Corporation Executive Magistrate Shahriar Rahman conducted a mobile court in the west lane of Ashrafiah Mosque on the basis of a conspiracy allegation by the opponent A.F.M. Tariq (date in the complaint) of Sarkar Atom, and demolished the wall of the house of an old woman named Mahmuda Begum. Later, seeing the injustice, the neighbors blocked the demolition of the wall and in the face of the opposition of the people present, the Rasik authorities immediately left the place after giving 7 days. It is known that on February 22, the neighbor A.F.M. Tariq (date in the complaint) filed a complaint with Rasik in order to achieve his own interests. After two consecutive complaints, a notice was sent to the victim Mahmuda Begum, and later they provided documents and evidence to Rasik.
Later, it was further learned that Tariq Sarkar, Atom’s brother-in-law and son-in-law, used the influence of the Deputy Head of the Planning Ministry and conspired with the Rasik authorities to systematically harass and intimidate the elderly Mahmuda Begum. Without any investigation, the Executive Magistrate of Rasik conducted a mobile court and demolished one side wall (corner) of the victim’s existing multi-storey building. Later, when the locals protested, seeing the injustice, the Rasik authorities quickly left the place, giving them a verbal time of 7 days in the face of public opposition. It has been alleged that the opponent, in order to achieve his own interests, has conspired to file a false and harassing complaint against the elderly Mahmuda Begum.
Victim Mahmuda Haque said, “I demolished my old house in 2022 and started construction of a new one in 2025. After this long period of time and without any hindrance at the beginning of the construction of the house, the City Corporation was notified of the complaint. That is why the City Corporation came to demolish my front part. But, the same reason that my house was demolished was cited, and the 8-10 houses on this street were not told anything. So, is the City Corporation’s law only for me? I am in great danger regarding these issues.
A neighbor told the reporter, “We see them living here, even though they were born here. If there was a problem, why wasn’t it resolved when the building was built? Now that everyone has a house here, it’s not a conspiracy. The law is equal for everyone. You have a law enforcement officer, so you should raise your fingers. If it breaks, let it all break.”
A neighbor who did not want to be named said that A.F.M. Tariq (Tarikh) Sarkar, Atom and the Deputy Secretary, used their influence to build a rapport with the local authorities and illegally broke down one side wall of Mahmuda Begum’s building by conducting a mobile operation. He also said that A.F.M. Tariq Sarkar is illegally abusing his power because it is difficult for Atom’s personal car to enter.
In this regard, Shahriar Rahman, Executive Magistrate of ROSKE, said, “We have ordered the demolition of whatever excess part we found outside the design approval.”
In this regard, Rakib Hasan, CEO of ROSIKE, said, “We have demolished the outer part as per the design in view of the complaint. If the victim has complained, we will also investigate the matter and take action,” he said.
