Police have arrested two members of a theft, robbery and blackmailing syndicate in different areas of the city with ganja. They were arrested from the SP Bungalow intersection area of Jessore city on Saturday (June 6) afternoon. Later, the two were sentenced to imprisonment and fined by a mobile court.
The arrested are Mehedi Hasan, son of Jalal Uddin of Gorapara area, and Jasim, son of Golam Mostafa of Arabpur area.
Suburban Police Camp In-charge SI Alok Kumar Dey said that Mehedi and Jasim were involved in various criminal activities in an organized manner for a long time.
They are accused of extorting money by threatening to take photos of young men and women, especially those staying in secluded places, and send them to their families.
There are also allegations of their involvement in theft, robbery and various anti-social activities.
Police said that when the matter came to the notice of the Superintendent of Police, he was instructed to bring the accused to book immediately. In continuation of this, a raid was conducted based on secret information and their location was identified.
They were arrested from the SP Bungalow area on Saturday afternoon. Marijuana was also recovered from them.
Later, Executive Magistrate Asif Uddin conducted a mobile court and sentenced Mehedi Hasan to two months in prison and a fine of Tk 100, and Jasim to 45 days in prison and a fine of Tk 100.
They were later sent to Jessore Central Jail for execution of their sentences.
