A day-long Disaster Risk Reduction and Adaptation Fair was held in Gaibandha to increase public awareness and strengthen people’s preparedness to deal with disasters.
Gaibandha Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Masudur Rahman Mollah inaugurated the day-long fair, organized by local non-governmental organizations SKS Foundation and Care Bangladesh and in collaboration with the district administration, at the Swadhinata Precinct of the district town on Wednesday afternoon. A discussion meeting was held after the inauguration.
Sadar Upazila Executive Officer Lokman Hossain, District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Shafiqul Islam, SKS Foundation Public Relations and Networking Coordinator Ashraful Alam and others spoke at the event.
Twenty stalls from government and various non-government organizations participated in the fair. The stalls presented various information on disaster preparedness, safe shelter, coping with the effects of climate change, agricultural adaptation, and awareness.
After the discussion, a disaster awareness exercise was held, where realistic demonstrations were shown on what to do during earthquakes, floods, and fires.

The speakers said that increasing people’s awareness and advance preparation in disaster-prone areas is the biggest way to reduce losses. Due to the impact of climate change, the risk of disasters is increasing in the northern part of the country. Therefore, government and private organizations and the general public must work together. They also emphasized the importance of involving local people to increase adaptation capacity.
