International Midwife Day’ was celebrated with due dignity in Jessore with the motto ‘Build a safe future for mothers and newborns, hold the hand of skilled midwives’.
To mark the day, a colorful rally and discussion meeting was organized on Tuesday (May 5) morning by the joint initiative of Jessore Nursing College and Institute and private nursing colleges in the district.
The theme for this year’s World Midwifery Day is ‘One Million More Midwives Needed’. This global call aims to address the shortage of skilled midwives around the world and ensure safe delivery services.
A colorful rally was taken out from the Jessore Nursing College and Institute premises this morning. Led by the institution’s principal, Arjina Khatun, the rally circled the Jessore General Hospital premises and ended at the institute. Nursing and Midwifery College instructors Khukumani and Mottakin Nesha, along with officials from various institutions, teachers and hundreds of students participated in it.
Later, in a discussion meeting organized in the organization’s meeting room, the speakers said that the touch of a midwife at the beginning of every new life is a blessing. From prenatal care to safe delivery and post-natal care, their role is immense. There is no alternative to skilled midwives in reducing maternal and child mortality in the country.
Principal Arjina Khatun said in her speech, ‘Midwifery is not just a profession, it is a great human responsibility. A midwife ensures the smile of a family and the life of a mother and child. However, countless mothers and children around the world are still deprived of proper services. To meet this challenge, it is the demand of the hour to produce one million more skilled midwives.’
The speakers at the event called on the new generation to come forward in this noble profession and also emphasized the importance of ensuring a suitable working environment and social status for midwives.
