To prevent waterlogging in Rajshahi metropolis during the upcoming monsoon season, the cleanliness department of Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) is taking and implementing various activities under the direction of Honorable Administrator Md. Mahfuzur Rahman Riton. A special campaign is being conducted to remove mud from the city’s primary and secondary drains through excavators. In addition, the work of removing mud and garbage from small drains through workers has been intensified.
RASIC Administrator Md. Mahfuzur Rahman Riton is active in the field to reduce the suffering of citizens due to waterlogging in the upcoming monsoon season. He is conducting on-site inspections day and night and providing necessary guidance to the concerned.
On Saturday (May 2) from 9:30 am to 12:00 am, he inspected various areas including the Barnali intersection, Dhalaan, Bheripara, and Adarsh Point in Rajshahi metropolis. Earlier, from 10:30 am to 2 pm, the RASIC administrator visited various areas including Barnali, Mathurdanga of Ward No. 16, and Apel Decorator intersection of Ward No. 6 to supervise the drain cleaning activities on the spot. During this time, he inspected the mud removal activities of the drains and gave necessary instructions to the concerned officials. He emphasized on completing the work quickly to keep the drainage system operational before the monsoon season.
In this regard, RASIK Administrator Md. Mahfuzur Rahman Riton said, Honorable Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has given the responsibility of ensuring citizen services. As per the Prime Minister’s instructions, we are working day and night to ensure the development of the city and citizen services. Special programs have been taken up to resolve waterlogging in the coming monsoon. Night activities are being conducted in areas where working during the day may cause public suffering. Our goal is to reduce citizen suffering by keeping the drainage system operational. I seek the cooperation of the city residents in this work.
He also said that many building owners have permanently sealed the drain pockets in front of their houses by pouring concrete over the drains—somewhere up to 40 feet, somewhere up to 50 feet. This makes it extremely difficult to clean the drains. Still, we are trying our best. In this regard, we request the city residents—do not seal the drain pockets by pouring concrete over the drains.
Present during the inspection were RASIC Chief Executive Officer Md. Rezaul Karim, Chief Cleaning Officer Sheikh Md. Mamun Dollar, Superintending Engineer (Acting) Ahmed Al Moin Parag, Deputy Chief Cleaning Officer Selim Reza Ranju and other officials of the cleaning department.
