The upazila administration has recovered the canal in Kotalipara upazila of Gopalganj within just 24 hours of its encroachment. The drive conducted on Monday afternoon was led by Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md. Masum Billah. Kotalipara Police Station Sub-Inspector Saddam Hossain, Kusla Union Parishad Chairman Sultan Mahmud Chowdhury Kalu, members of the upazila administration and police administration and local leaders were present during the drive. Locals alleged that some unscrupulous people illegally occupied the traditional Kusla canal, which has been flowing for a long time, by installing bamboo pilings on Sunday. When the matter came to the attention of the administration, immediate action was taken. Kusla Union Parishad Chairman Sultan Mahmud Chowdhury Kalu said that this hundred-year-old canal is very important for the people of the surrounding 6 to 7 villages. The canal’s water is being used for various purposes including irrigation. If the canal is encroached upon, the common people will suffer greatly. Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md. Masum Billah said that the government has strict instructions to keep the government canal operational. After receiving information that the Kushla canal has been illegally encroached upon, a quick drive was launched under the instructions of the Deputy Commissioner and the canal was freed from encroachment. Legal action will be taken against those involved in the encroachment and such drives will continue in the future.
