Special Response Battalion-13 (SRB-13) has arrested a man named Ratan Chandra Sarkar (34) on charges of strangling his wife to death in Gangachara, Rangpur. He was arrested in a raid last night. The arrested Ratan is the son of Mithun Chandra Sarkar of Uttar Khaleya Hajipara under Gangachara police station.

According to the case report, on July 21, 2025, Gangachara Model Police Station received news of the accidental death of victim Shantana Rani. The police went to the spot, prepared a post-mortem report of the body and sent the body to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for autopsy. A case of accidental death was filed at Gangachara Police Station on July 22, 2025. On July 3, 2026, a doctor from the forensic department of Rangpur Medical College gave his opinion that the victim was strangled to death. As the victim’s father did not agree to file a case in this incident, SI Ishaq Ali of Gangachara Model Police Station filed a murder case as the plaintiff on October 15, 2026. Initial police investigation revealed that the accused Ratan used to physically torture the victim Shantana Rani at various times for demanding dowry. When the victim refused to pay the dowry, he physically tortured her and strangled her to death on July 21, 2025, between 9:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

After the case was filed, SRB increased its detective surveillance along with other law enforcement agencies to arrest the accused. In continuation of this, based on specific information and secret information, an operation team of CPSC, SRB-13, Rangpur conducted a raid in Paglapir Bazar of Rangpur district at 02.10 am on October 22, 2026 and arrested Ratan Chandra Sarkar, the main accused in the discussed murder case.

The arrested accused has been handed over to the concerned police station for further legal action, confirmed SRB-13 Media Cell sources.
