Thousands of people have been suffering due to the lack of a bridge in Gaibandha. More than a decade ago, the locals built a wooden bridge in the Sechchhashram to provide a crossing, but now it has become unstable and unusable, turning it into a death trap. People on both sides have to cross at the risk of their lives. This has put school-going students, sick people and commuters in trouble.

It is known that people on both sides of the Alai River in Taluk Rifaitpur area of Badiakhali Union of Gaibandha Sadar Upazila used to travel on floating drums. More than a decade ago, the locals built a wooden bridge with the money collected from the villagers and the irrigation department and started communication. But due to long-term use, the wooden bridge has become unstable. The bridge has become a death trap as it has become unusable. Every few days, various parts of the bridge break down, cutting off communication. Since all communication, including schools, markets, and hospitals, is on this side of the river, people have to travel by boat and wooden rafts, taking risks.

Although there has been a demand for the construction of a bridge here for a long time, the local people’s representatives promised to build a bridge during the elections, but the locals complain that they did not follow up after the elections. Young children have to take risks to go to school every day on this wooden shack in Moron Fader.

Local resident Shariful Islam said that despite visiting various offices, no solution is being found. Everyone wants to build a bridge before the vote, but no one inquires about the vote. One has to risk their lives to move around. If the bridge is damaged, everyone, including young students, has to travel on a raft of banana trees.

Local UP member Abdur Rouf Sumon said that they are occasionally repairing this dangerous bridge with the help of local residents and their own funds. Patients and young students are sometimes in trouble.

Expressing the suffering of the local people, LGED’s Gaibandha Sadar Upazila Engineer Md. Bablu Mia said,

A road is required for the construction of the bridge. Since the ID number of the connecting road to that bridge is not available, the construction of the bridge is taking time. The necessary process for the construction of the bridge is being completed to facilitate communication for the locals.

Thousands of people from several villages, including students from several schools, cross this dangerous wooden bridge, which is more than 150 meters long.
