An important meeting was held on Zoom with the Honorable Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Medical University, Professor Dr. FM Siddiqui, and the Honorable Ambassador of Bangladesh to the Maldives, Mr. Dr. Md. Nazmul Islam. The issue of young deaths of expatriate Bangladeshi workers in the Maldives was discussed seriously in this meeting held Tuesday, October 13, 2026. The meeting was informed that many Bangladeshi workers in the Maldives are dying at a young age and the mortality rate is increasing alarmingly. The Bangladesh High Commission has expressed deep concern over this issue. As the leading medical university in Bangladesh, BMU discussed the cause of death and possible solutions. BMU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. FM Siddiqui gave various technical guidelines to solve this problem. He mentioned that if clear information, data and instructions are received through coordination between the governments of the two countries and with the concerned ministries, BMU will take necessary measures to solve this problem. The meeting also discussed the issue of Maldivian doctors being interested in pursuing higher degrees from BMU. However, if they provide the necessary information and the type of degree they want to pursue, the BMU authorities will examine it and give necessary instructions on the next steps. At this time, the Vice Chancellor hoped that the existing MoUs of BMU with China and India could also be examined and such MoUs or Memorandum of Understanding could be signed with Maldives. Views were also exchanged on possible areas of academic cooperation and mutual partnership between Maldives and Bangladesh Medical University. Other officials of the embassy were present during this important meeting. Edited by Professor Dr. Md. Saiful Azam Ranju.
