The 2-day 6th International Conference of Bangladesh Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition was held at the Shaheed Abu Sayeed Convention Center of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) on Saturday, November 8, 2025. Various events including scientific seminars were organized on this occasion. More than 600 teachers, specialist doctors, doctors, and students of pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition participated in this important conference. In addition to domestic doctors, foreign specialist doctors also participated in it. In this international conference, emphasis was placed on the treatment, prevention, awareness raising, state-of-the-art medical services and expansion of pediatric gastroenterology medical programs. In addition, the issue of giving more importance to research and medical education in pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition was highlighted. Vice-Chancellor of BMU, Professor Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam, was the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony of the international conference. The event was presided over by the President of Bangladesh Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, Professor Dr. ASM Bazlul Karim. The special guests were BMU’s Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Development) Professor Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman Howlader. The honorable guest was Professor Dr. Md. Atiar Rahman, Dean of the Faculty of Children, BMU. The welcome speech was delivered by the Secretary General of the Society, Professor Dr. Md. Roknuzzaman. The vote of thanks was given by the Treasurer of the Society, Dr. Md. Atiar Rahman.
In his speech as a special guest, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad said that although the problem of malnutrition among children in the country has largely disappeared, a new problem has emerged in the form of a strong tendency among children to eat fast food, junk food, etc. If children cannot be stopped from this tendency from now on, it will become a major health risk in the future.
In his speech as a special guest, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Development) Professor Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman Howlader said that the issue of gastroenterology and nutrition of children is closely related to eating habits and lifestyle. Therefore, public awareness needs to be created about what kind of food should be eaten and what food should not be eaten.
Other speakers said that the international conference of the Bangladesh Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition will contribute greatly to the prevention of hepatitis, diarrhea, and chronic liver disease in children, increasing public awareness on these issues, exchanging knowledge among doctors, and promoting treatment and research related to children’s liver and gastroenterology. It will also play a role in ensuring proper nutrition, which is essential for the good health of children.
The seminar also informed that the Department of Pediatric Gastroenterology of Bangladesh Medical University provides advanced medical services for children’s liver diseases, gastroenterology and nutritional problems.
