An exceptional ‘Lungi Parade’ was held at Jessore University of Science and Technology (JUST) with joy, enthusiasm and colorful arrangements. The parade was organized with the aim of presenting the folk dress worn by the common people, Lungi, in a positive way in the university’s culture and breaking the social taboos and class discrimination centered on clothing. The main theme of this year’s parade was ‘Cultural Equality’.
The exceptional ‘Lungi Parade’, initiated by the English Department’s “Learning Language Through Literature” course, began with a brief discussion meeting in front of Michael Madhusudan Dutta cum Academic Building at 11 am on Sunday. Then, the parade passed through the main road of the university, passed in front of Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose Academic Building, passed by National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam Academic Building, and ended in front of Michael Madhusudan Dutta cum Academic Building. Teachers and students of various departments of the university spontaneously participated in it wearing traditional Bengali clothes such as lungi, sari, fatua and gamcha. JUB’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Sheikh Mahmudul Hasan was the chief guest at the Lungi Parade and Treasurer Professor Dr. Mohammad Faruk Hasan was present as the special guest.
In his speech as the chief guest, JBU Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Sheikh Mahmudul Hasan said, “The true dignity of a person is determined not by clothes, but by humanity, sense of responsibility and discipline. Clothes only carry the identity of culture, but they can never be the sole identity of a person.” He praised the excellent organization of this exceptional parade and thanked everyone involved, including the organizers. He also expressed hope that such innovative and commendable activities of the English Department will continue in the future.
According to the organizers, there is a narrow mindset in society that considers certain clothes as ‘elite’ and common people’s clothes as ‘inferior’. The theme ‘Cultural Equality’ has been chosen to eliminate this cultural hegemony and clothing-based social division. No culture or clothing is small – giving equal respect to all traditions is the main message of this parade.
The event was attended by Professor Dr. Mariam Jamila, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences of JBU, Dr. Farzana Nasrin, Chairman of the English Department, Dr. Md. Hamidur Rahman, Proctor of the University, Dr. Md. Hamidur Rahman, Associate Professor of the English Department, Dr. Munibur Rahman, Dr. Farhana Yasmin, Dr. Abdullah Al Mamun, and teachers and students from various departments.
