A terrible fire broke out in the Old Registry Office neighborhood of Naogaon town, destroying the homes and furniture of four families, causing extensive damage. Most of the families’ belongings were destroyed in the fire. The incident spread panic in the area.
A fire broke out suddenly in a house in the Old Registry Office neighborhood around 7:30 pm on Monday. Locals believe that the fire may have started after lighting the evening lamp. However, the actual cause of the fire could not be immediately confirmed.
Eyewitnesses said that a house was first on fire. Within moments, the flames spread to the surrounding houses. The intensity of the fire was so high that the family members did not even have a chance to remove their essential belongings. In the blink of an eye, the furniture, clothes, bedding and various daily necessities of the house were burnt.
Four families, including Sanjay Sarkar, suffered extensive damage in the fire. Locals said that their long-term savings and essential items were burnt in the fire, along with their homes.
The affected Sanjay Sarkar said in a tearful voice, “Everything is over for me. I am destitute. I have nothing left. What will I do now, where will I go?”
Another victim, Rita Rani, said, “I have nothing left in my house, everything is gone. Now if the government does not help, I have no choice but to die. I have a debt of about 1 million taka.”
Upon receiving the information, the fire service members quickly reached the spot and started working to control the fire. After a long effort, the fire was brought under control. The fire service’s actions prevented the fire from spreading to other nearby houses.
Naogaon Fire Station Deputy Assistant Director Zakir Hossain said, “Initially, the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage are not known. Rescue and search operations are underway at the scene. The actual cause of the fire and the extent of the damage will be known after the investigation.”
Meanwhile, upon receiving the news of the fire, Naogaon-5 (Sadar) MP Zahidul Islam Dhalu, who is in Dhaka, visited the scene as his representative. He spoke to the affected families and assured them of all-round cooperation besides being by their side.
Four families have been left virtually homeless and without support in this sudden fire. The affected families have demanded immediate government and private assistance. Locals have also called for humanitarian assistance to stand by the victims.
