The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has solved the mystery surrounding the death of a bus helper in a road accident in Gazipur after nearly two and a half years. The alleged covered van driver, Md Rashed, 22, who had been absconding since the incident, has been arrested. He later gave a confessional statement before the court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
According to a press release issued by PBI Gazipur, the incident took place on June 24, 2024, when a passenger bus was travelling from Kishoreganj towards Dhaka. At around 7:00am, when the bus reached the Rajendrapur area of Gazipur, a covered van coming from the opposite direction collided head-on with the bus.
Bus helper Sumon Mia, who was standing near the front door, sustained serious injuries in the collision. He was rushed to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital, where the attending physician declared him dead.
Following the accident, the covered van driver fled the scene.
The deceased’s wife, Mst. Sanzida Akter Mim, later filed a case with Joydebpur Police Station under the relevant provisions of the Road Transport Act, 2018. After the initial investigation, the case was subsequently taken up by PBI Gazipur for further investigation following a court order.
A special investigation team of PBI Gazipur, using intelligence and technological assistance, traced the whereabouts of the long-absconding accused. He was arrested at around 5:00pm on October 4, 2026.
The accused was produced before the court on October 5, where he reportedly made a confessional statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
PBI Gazipur Superintendent of Police Md Rofiqul Akter said that ensuring road safety and discipline requires awareness and responsibility among traffic police, citizens, vehicle owners and transport workers.
He urged everyone to remain responsible and follow traffic rules to prevent road accidents and loss of lives.
PBI said the accused has been sent to court in accordance with legal procedures and that the investigation into the case is still underway.
