A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) and the World Health Organization (WHO) yesterday, Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at the office of the Vice-Chancellor of BMU. The signing ceremony was held on behalf of Bangladesh Medical University by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam. The signing ceremony was held on behalf of the World Health Organization by Dr. Ahmed Jamshed Mohammad, the organization’s Bangladesh Representative. As a result of this signing, the World Health Organization will provide the necessary technical support for BMU’s infection prevention and control. The goal of this agreement is to reduce healthcare-associated infections and improve patient and health worker safety through the implementation of a multimodal infection prevention and control (IPC) strategy. The overall objective of this agreement is to strengthen infection prevention and control practices within the Bangladesh Medical University system through technical cooperation with the World Health Organization to reduce healthcare-associated infections. The World Health Organization will provide assistance, particularly in providing technical assistance, capacity building and training, monitoring, evaluation, knowledge sharing, technical skills development, supervision, etc.
At the agreement signing ceremony, BMU’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam said, Bangladesh Medical University has taken very conscious and effective steps to prevent and control infections. BMU has a high-level committee for infection prevention and control, and a separate allocation has been made in BMU’s annual budget. BMU is not only involved in infection prevention and control in this university; rather, it is ready to work as a model institution in this activity nationwide. Currently, BMU is making outstanding contributions to the health sector, especially in the qualitative change of higher medical education. There is great improvement in overall medical services including cancer treatment, transplant treatment activities, NICU services. If BMU is given all possible facilities provided by the World Health Organization, this university will move further in medical education, medical services and research.
At the event, World Health Organization Bangladesh Representative Dr. Ahmed Jamshed Mohammad said that Bangladesh Medical University will be provided with necessary support in infection prevention and control activities. At the same time, he mentioned that the organization is also interested in providing necessary support including the existing facilities of the World Health Organization to develop BMU as a center and institution of excellence, including improving the quality of services.
It was informed at the ceremony that as a result of this agreement, it will be possible to get necessary training support in infection prevention and control activities, gain experience consistent with global infection prevention and control standards, and promote the infection prevention and control activities of this university as a model, and this model will be followed by other medical colleges and hospitals in the country. In other words, BMU will lead the countrywide in infection prevention and control.
The agreement signing ceremony was attended by BMU’s Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) and Infection Control Committee Chairman Professor Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Development) Professor Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman Howlader, Treasurer Professor Dr. Nahrin Akhtar, Dean of the Faculty of Basic Science and Paraclinical Science Professor Dr. Saif Ullah Munshi, Dean of the Faculty of Preventive and Social Medicine Professor Dr. Md. Atiqul Haque, Registrar Professor Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam, Director Hospital Brigadier General Abu Noman Mohammad Mosleh Uddin, Member Secretary of the Infection Control Committee Dr. Kazi Ali Aftab and other members of the IPC Core Committee.
