State Minister for Youth and Sports Md. Aminul
Haque believes that the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) new domestic cricket
structure could inspire the development of other sports in the country.

He made the remarks yesterday night while inaugurating the BCB’s new domestic
tournament, known as ‘Domestic Three’, which brings T20, one-day and four-day
cricket under a single structure.

Aminul said the new format could help keep domestic cricket active for six to
eight months of the year and contribute to sustaining Bangladesh’s success at
the international level.

“This format will not only take Bangladesh cricket forward but also inspire
all other sports in the country,” he said.

The minister said one of the major objectives of the new structure was to
ensure that cricketers remain active throughout much of the year.

“If we can keep domestic cricket on the field for around six, seven or eight
months of the year, I firmly believe that many of the problems we have
discussed for years will gradually be addressed,” he continued.

Aminul said there was often a significant gap between players representing
the national team and those involved in domestic cricket, but regular
competition could help reduce that difference.

“I believe this perception will change when we start this domestic cricket
programme. We want our cricketers to remain on the field and matches to
continue regularly so that we can establish and sustain the success we seek
in international cricket,” he said.

He thanked BCB directors, sponsors, national cricketers and others involved
in the initiative, particularly BCB president Tamim Iqbal, for their efforts
to develop the game.

Aminul also said he had discussed with Tamim and other cricket officials ways
to improve cricket, take the game to the grassroots level and preserve its
status in the country.

He hoped that the approach adopted in cricket would have a positive impact on
other sports.

“We want to move forward with cricket, football, hockey, badminton,
athletics, martial arts and swimming equally. All sports belong to us, and we
are all Bangladeshis,” he said.

He also highlighted the broader social role of sports, saying sporting
activities could contribute to positive changes in families, society and the
state.

“We believe sports can bring qualitative changes to our families, society and
the state. We want to move away from a culture of revenge and build a
beautiful, peaceful, humane and sports-oriented Bangladesh,” he said.

Aminul finally urged the six teams participating in Domestic Three to remain
attentive to the development of sports beyond cricket.

“We want the six teams represented here today to look beyond cricket and keep
an eye on all sports,” he said.
