BMU has Celebrated 179th World Anaesthesia Day- 2025

Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) celebrated the 179th World Anaesthesia Day 2025, a very old day in the history of medical science, with the participation of doctors and anaesthesiologists serving in the ICU. Thursday, on the morning of October 16, 2025, the rally organized to mark the day was inaugurated as the chief guest by the Vice-Chancellor of BMU, Professor Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam, at the front yard of BMU A and B blocks, Battala. At the time,  Pro-Vice (Administration) Professor Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad, Chairman of the Department of Anaesthesia, Analgesia and Intensive Care Medicine of BMU, Professor Dr. Md. Mostafa Kamal, Convener of the 179th World Anaesthesia Day 2025 Celebration Committee, Dr. Hasnul Alam Shamim, Member Secretary Dr. Mohammad Shamsul Arefin were present. Later, on the occasion of the day, an important scientific session was organized at the Shaheed Abu Sayeed Convention Center of BMU by the initiative of Bangladesh Society of Anaesthesiologists Critical Care and Pain Physicians. Anaesthesiologists, including leaders of the society, participated in it. Here, the president of Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB), eminent anaesthesiologist Professor Dr. Harun Al Rashid, Secretary General of DAB Dr. Md. Zahirul Islam (Shakil), former Secretary General of BSACCPP Professor AKM Azizul Haque spoke as special guests.
In this important scientific session, national and regional eminent physicians attended and shared their expertise and knowledge in various fields. Experts expressed optimism that through this, Anaesthesiologists will be able to make significant contributions to further advance medical services in this country.
In his speech as a special guest, Professor Dr. Harun Al Rashid said, Anaesthesiologists make a great contribution in the operation theater, including providing medical care to patients in the ICU. In the last 30 years, there have been incredible developments and changes in the field of Anaesthesiology in medical science. However, the number of Anaesthesiologists is still higher than the country’s needs. Therefore, the creation and appointment of necessary posts of Anaesthesiologists is now the need of the hour.
Dr. Lutful Aziz, Dr. Ujjal Kumar Mallick, Dr. Md. Enamul Haque Milton presented important papers in the scientific session. They highlighted various topics including the role of Anaesthesiologists in providing services to patients suffering from various diseases including road accidents and injuries, the use of AI, the role of pain medicine, declaring patients brain dead, and the role of Anaesthesiologists in advancing cadaveric transplants.
Dr. Mahbub Zaman and Dr. Sharmin moderated the scientific session, where Professor Dr. UH Shahera Khatun, Professor Dr. Kazi Mesbah Uddin Iqbal, Professor Dr. Khalilur Rahman, Professor Dr. Fakhrunnesa, Professor Dr. Nizam Uddin, Colonel (Retd.) Razia Khanam, Professor Dr. Mannan, etc. also delivered commemorative speeches. Other speakers included Professor Dr. Md. Mostafa Kamal, Chairman of the Department of Anaesthesia, Analgesia and Intensive Care Medicine of BMU, Dr. Hasnul Alam Shamim, Convener of the 179th World Anaesthesia Day 2025 Celebration Committee, Dr. Mohammad Shamsul Arefin, Dr. Saifuddin, etc.
The speakers urged further development and expansion of Anaesthesia and all its sub-specialities to build the country’s health system in line with the modern world. They said that Anaesthesiology is an essential branch of modern medical science. At present, Anaesthesiologists are not limited to pain-free surgery alone, but have been successfully playing an important role in providing intensive care to terminally ill patients, curing chronic pain, and treating incurable patients. In an effort to elevate Anaesthesiology, the pioneer of modern surgical treatment, to the highest medical standards, the Bangladesh Society of Anaesthesiologists Critical Care and Pain Physicians is making relentless efforts to achieve its goal by organising scientific seminars, training’s and workshops.
