Workshop on national research needs and priorities held at BMU

An important workshop on National Research Need and Prioritization was held at Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) on Tuesday, October 14, 2025. The workshop, organized with the support of the World Health Organization, was presided over by the Vice Chancellor of BMU, Professor Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam. The workshop was moderated by the Chairman of the Department of Public Health and Informatics, Professor Dr. Md. Atiqul Haque, and was attended by the  Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Development) of BMU, Professor Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman Howlader,  Chairman of BMRC, Professor Dr. Saeba Akhtar, Chairman of the Department of Oncology, BMU, Professor Dr. Syed Akram Hossain, Executive Editor of BMU Journal, Professor Dr. M. Mustafa Zaman, representatives of the World Health Organization, representatives of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, representatives of various medical colleges and institutes including Dhaka Medical College, NIPORT, were present and provided their valuable opinions.

The workshop participants gave guidance on determining the type of research needed at the national level in the health sector, taking into account the present and future. The experts highlighted the need for determining the methodology, especially following the Delphi methodology, practising evidence-based medicine, completing important health sector tasks based on evidence, focusing on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, ensuring maternal and child health, ensuring healthcare for the elderly, giving importance to non-communicable diseases including diabetes and hypertension, rehabilitation services, improving the health service system, giving importance to health education, giving importance to the opinions of the Health Reform Commission, completing work in small groups, involving experts from all levels related to the health sector, and making Bangladesh Medical University, as a university, a leader and guide in health research, and above all, taking coordinated initiatives to meet the research needs of the country’s health sector. The speakers expressed their hope that their discussion will fulfill the research needs of the health sector at the national level, and that the country’s health research sector will prosper and research activities will also move in the right direction. At the same time, such workshops will be able to make a great contribution to determining the needs of national-level research in the health sector on a priority basis.
