The wait of a mother who lost her child for two months and three days in Gaibandha has come to an end. The father was accused of taking 11-month-old baby Fatema Akhter Jannati away from her mother and disappearing. Later, the police received information that the child was sold for 31,000 taka. After the news was broadcast on Soom TV, the child was finally rescued in a special operation by the DB police. Mother Rumana Akhter broke down in tears after getting her child back. A total of four people involved in the incident, including the child’s drug-addicted father, have been arrested.
They were arrested and the child was rescued after conducting raids in various areas from morning to night on Sunday (September 20).
It is known that Rumana, from the bus terminal area of Gaibandha city, married Hamidul, from the Dhanghara area of the city, in July 2024. A few days after the marriage, allegations of torture for drug money surfaced. Unable to bear the torture, Rumana took refuge in her father’s house a few months ago with her child, 11-month-old daughter Fatima.
On the afternoon of July 17, Hamidul, the father, disappeared after taking the child in his arms and buying him juice. He never returned. Later, he demanded 10,000 taka over his mobile phone in exchange for the child. Rumana, driven by poverty, turned off her mobile phone when she could not pay. Hamidul never returned after that. He never returned her daughter either. Little Fatima, 11 months old, disappeared into the darkness.
To get her child back, she filed a case with Gaibandha Executive Magistrate Court-1 on August 27, accusing two people. Then, on September 17, a pictorial report on the incident was aired on Soom Television. The district police took action immediately after the report was aired.
On Sunday (September 20) morning, the child’s drug-addicted father Hamidul was arrested from Saharbazar in Sadullapur of the district. Police claim that sensational information came out during his interrogation. Later, his colleague, bus helper Majid, was arrested from Pirganj of Rangpur. Based on the information provided by them, the DB police conducted a raid in the Madanerpara Chholer More area of Fulchhari of the district at night. The missing child Fatema Akhter Jannati was rescued from there. A woman named Morsheda Begum and her husband Shahidul were arrested along with the child.
The child, who had been left empty in her mother’s arms for two months, finally returned to her. The mother hugged her helpless child to her chest and cried with joy, and a flood of joy returned among the relatives.
Gaibandha District Detective Branch Officer-in-Charge Md. Mottaleb Hossain said that Hamidul, the father, sold his child for Tk 31,000 to raise money for drugs. He also mediated to sell the child to a childless couple. Legal action will be taken against those arrested.
