Koyra, a coastal upazila near the Sundarbans. Once, there was concern among the locals about theft, drugs, gambling and various crimes. After the evening, there was a fear of crime in many areas. However, that picture has started changing with time. With the police’s activity to maintain law and order, regular operations and public-related activities, relief is returning to Koyra.
Koyra Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Rashedul Alam has taken various initiatives to improve the law and order situation in the last few months after taking charge. In addition to conducting campaigns against drugs and gambling, he has increased direct contact with the general public. At the same time, he is visiting schools and colleges to make students aware of staying away from drugs and gambling.
According to police sources, after OC Md. Rashedul Alam took charge, several raids have been conducted against gambling and drugs. Police said that 13 people involved in gambling have been arrested in these raids. In addition, raids have also been conducted against those involved in drug dealing.
According to locals, many criminal activities that were previously openly carried out have now decreased significantly due to regular police activity. The police operation has created a kind of panic, especially among those involved in gambling and drugs. Some locals have also said that many have left the area and gone into hiding.
However, OC Md. Rashedul Alam did not limit himself to the campaign alone. He also emphasized on creating social awareness to curb crime. Every Friday, he visits mosques and religious institutions in different areas and talks to the general public. He is calling on people to unite against these social ills by highlighting the harmful aspects of drugs, gambling and child marriage.
Local residents are viewing such community-based activities of the police positively. According to them, crime prevention becomes more effective if the people of the society are involved in controlling the law and order situation along with the police.
OC Rashedul Alam also regularly visits various educational institutions in Koyra Upazila. He talks to school and college students and highlights the harmful aspects of drugs, gambling and criminal activities. He advises students to focus on their studies and be aware of their future.
Speaking to locals, it was revealed that there has also been a change in the way the general public receives services at the police station. They said that the police have become more proactive in listening to people who bring complaints, providing necessary legal assistance, and taking prompt action.
Maintaining good law and order in Koira, which is adjacent to the Sundarbans, is important not only for local public safety but also for the security of the Sundarbans. In order to prevent various types of crimes surrounding the forest and river, there is a need for coordination with the police, the forest department and other law enforcement agencies. In this case too, locals have mentioned that OC Rashedul Alam played an effective role in suppressing crimes centered around the Sundarbans during his tenure.
The people of Koyra hope that this police activity will continue. Along with conducting the campaign, increasing social awareness, involving students, and increasing police communication with the general public will make it possible to build a crime-free and safe Koyra.
Continuity is needed to make the changes that locals are talking about in the activities of Koyra Police Station sustainable after OC Md. Rashedul Alam took charge. Because crime prevention is not the sole responsibility of the police; a safe Koyra can be built only with the joint efforts of the police, administration, public representatives, teachers, guardians and the general public.
Koyra Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Rashedul Alam said, “As per the instructions of DIG Sir, Khulna Superintendent of Police Sarkar Omar Faruk and Circle SP Md. Amir Hamza, we are always on the alert to maintain good law and order situation in Koyra Upazila. Ensuring people’s safety and controlling crime is our main responsibility.”
He said, “We are giving importance to the fact that the common people can come to the police station comfortably and talk about their problems. The complaints of the people are being taken seriously and necessary legal action is being taken. As a result, a friendly relationship is being created between the police and the common people.”
Highlighting the police’s stance against drugs and gambling, OC Rashedul Alam said, “Our campaigns and awareness programs against social crimes including drugs, gambling, child marriage will continue. It is not possible to eradicate all crimes with the police alone. For this, the common people must also come forward and cooperate with the police by providing information.”
He added, “We are trying to make people aware by visiting educational institutions, mosques and various social organizations. We are talking to them, especially the youth and students, so that they do not get involved in crimes like drugs and gambling.”
Talking to people from different walks of life in Koyra, it is learned that increasing the contact between the general public and the police makes it easier to obtain information to curb crime. If people quickly inform the police about any local problems or crimes, there is an opportunity to take quick action.
Locals are also seeing the increase in the number of people coming to Koyra police station as a positive development. According to them, the cooperation of the public along with the police is very important to maintain good law and order situation.
Ozior Rahman Gazi, a local resident and van driver of Khulna’s Koyra Upazila, said, “People’s confidence increases when they can go to the police station and talk about their problems. If the police listen carefully to the common people and take necessary action, then the common people will also be more encouraged to provide information against criminals. The current OC is sincere and good. I enjoyed talking to him.”
