A seminar on Piloting Locally Developed AI in Radiology: A Collaborative Initiative between BMU & BUET was held under the joint initiative of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). Yesterday, Tuesday, September 2, 2025, BMU’s Super Specialized The seminar, organized by the Department of Radiology and imaging of the university and the Department of Biomedical Engineering of BUET, was held at the hospital’s lecture hall. The chief guest was BUET’s Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Abu Borhan Mohammad Badruzzaman. BMU’s Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam presided over the seminar. The seminar was organized as part of the dissemination of a research project titled ‘An Artificial Intelligence Enabled Web-Application for Assistive Online Reporting of Radiological Images’ under the supervision of BUET’s Biomedical Engineering Department. The project was funded by the World Bank.

In his speech as the chief guest, Vice Chancellor of BUET Prof. Dr. Abu Borhan Mohammad Badruzzaman said, AI has taken a special place in this world of advanced technology. AI is capable of making a special contribution to the development of medical science. However, to get effective benefits from AI, it is necessary to develop AI locally in different countries as the place and environment are different. The development and use of AI is essential not only in radiology, oncology, pathology, but also in various branches of medical science. If BMU and BUET work together, the healthcare sector in the country will take a step forward. Many things including medical record keeping are possible to implement.

In his speech, Vice Chancellor of BMU, Prof. Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam said, if BMU and BUET work together, the healthcare sector in Bangladesh will enter a new era. New innovations, discoveries, and inventions will bring welfare to patients. They will play a huge role in increasing the quality of the healthcare sector. The suffering of patients will be alleviated. If doctors and engineers work together, the door to new and improved medical services will be opened in the healthcare sector of the country. The real beneficiaries of which will be the patients. Therefore, it is the demand of the hour for doctors and engineers to work together.

BMU’s Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof. Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Development) Prof. Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman Howlader, Treasurer Prof. Dr. Nahrin Akhtar, Registrar Prof. Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam, and Chairman of the Department of Clinical Oncology Prof.  Dr. Syed Md. Akram Hossain spoke at this important seminar.

At the seminar, BUET teacher Prof. Dr. M. Tariq Arafat presented a paper on biomedical engineering. BUET teacher Prof. Dr. Toufiq Hasan presented a keynote paper on the need and importance of AI in radiology.

BMU’s Faculty of Children’s Dean Prof. Dr. Md. Atiar Rahman, Faculty of Medical Technology Dean Prof. Dr. M. Abu Hena Chowdhury, Faculty of Dental Dean Associate Prof. Dr. Sakhawat Hossain Sayanto, and other BMU teachers, doctors, and officials were present at this important seminar. In addition, the Honorable Vice-Chancellors of BUET and engineers of the related projects were present.

The report on radiology imaging at the seminar highlighted the use, importance, and necessity of AI, and mentioned that radiology imaging is one of the most important branches of modern medicine. Diagnosis and treatment planning are done by collecting images of internal organs of the body through technologies such as X-ray, CT scan, MRI, ultrasonography, etc. It is very important to extract accurate information from these images and understand the health condition of the patient. Here, accuracy and speed of information play an essential role in reporting. Recently, artificial intelligence or AI is bringing revolutionary changes in radiology reporting in the developed world. It automatically collects information useful for diagnosing diseases from a large amount of image data, which makes the work of radiologists easier and faster. It makes diagnosis more accurate, faster, and effective, which has ushered in a new era in the field of medicine. It is important that it be introduced in the interest of patients in Bangladesh.
