President Mirza Fakhrul leaves Thakurgaon with the love of the people
President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has left his home district Thakurgaon for Dhaka after a two-day official visit. After receiving a guard of honor at the district circuit house at 1:40 pm on Monday (September 7), he departed for Dhaka by helicopter from the helipad at the Mohammad Ali Stadium ground at 1:50 pm.
According to protocol, the President was scheduled to leave for Dhaka at 2:10 pm. However, he left Thakurgaon about 20 minutes before the scheduled time.
At that time, the President was bid farewell by Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Mohammad Rafiqul Haque, Superintendent of Police Md. Belal Hossain and members of the Citizen Reception Organizing Committee.
Earlier, the President arrived at the Mohammad Ali Stadium in Thakurgaon from Dhaka by helicopter at 12:58 pm on Sunday (September 6). This was his first official visit to his home district of Thakurgaon after assuming office.
Upon reaching the district, the President was welcomed by the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police and members of the civic reception organizing committee. Later, he went to the district circuit house and received a guard of honor.
At the beginning of the visit, he visited the Senua Cemetery in the city and paid homage to his parents’ graves. Then, he went to his residence in the Kalibari area. He had lunch there and rested for some time.
In the afternoon, the President attended a public reception organized by the Citizens’ Committee at the large grounds of Thakurgaon Government Boys’ High School. A large number of people from different parts of the district gathered there to catch a glimpse of him. Many waited for a long time despite the rain.
At the public reception, people from different classes and professions of the locality greeted and congratulated the President with flowers. An emotional atmosphere was created at the venue. The President, overwhelmed by the love of the people of his district, expressed his gratitude to the people of Thakurgaon.
After the reception, he returned to his residence and paid courtesy calls on dignitaries, relatives, and local residents. The President stayed at his residence for the night.
On the second and final day of the visit, on Monday morning, he again paid courtesy calls on dignitaries, relatives and locals. Later, he laid the foundation stone of the proposed ‘Thakurgaon University’ in Jamalpur area of Sadar Upazila, along the Thakurgaon-Pirganj road.
At the foundation stone laying ceremony, the President sought the cooperation of the locals in the planned construction of the university and its development activities. At the time, the issue of the long-standing expectations and emotions of the people of Thakurgaon regarding the establishment of the university also came up.
After laying the foundation stone, the President returned to his residence around noon for lunch and rest. Later, he went to the District Circuit House and received a guard of honor. After that, he reached the helipad at the Mohammad Ali Stadium and left for Dhaka by helicopter.
Security has been beefed up in Thakurgaon ahead of the President’s visit. Law enforcement officers have been deployed at important areas including Mohammad Ali Stadium, District Circuit House, Senua Cemetery, President’s residence, public reception venue and the university foundation stone laying site. Vigilance has been increased in these areas for security reasons.
A festive atmosphere was created throughout Thakurgaon during the two-day visit. People from different areas came to the city to catch a glimpse of the President. There was great enthusiasm among the general public, especially around the public reception and the laying of the foundation stone of the university.
Earlier, in the presidential election held in the National Parliament on August 20, BNP candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was elected President with 255 votes.
Before running for president, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir resigned from his posts as a member of parliament, BNP secretary general, and Minister of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives.
