A man named Shimul (28) was killed after being beaten up by a mob on charges of trying to steal cows and goats from a cowshed in Bagha, Rajshahi. Another man named Samjan (50) was seriously injured in the incident. He has been sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital from Bagha Upazila Health Complex for advanced treatment.

The deceased Shimul is the son of Mostafa of Jotkadirpur village in Pakuria union of Bagha upazila. The injured Samjan is the son of Nabir Uddin of the same village.

The incident took place at Yarul’s house in Jotkadirpur village on Sunday (September 6) night.

According to police and local sources, there was an allegation that someone was trying to steal cows and goats from Yarul’s barn at night. Upon realizing the matter, Yarul opened the bedroom door and shouted ‘thief, thief’. At that time, people in the area rushed to arrest Shimul and Samjan and beat them up, it is said.

Later, the two seriously injured were taken to the emergency department of Bagha Upazila Health Complex in the same van at around 1:45 am. The doctor on duty there, Dr. Ismail Shimul, was declared dead.

On Monday (September 7) morning, when the injured Samjan’s physical condition deteriorated, he was sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. Attempts were made to record his statement before sending him to the hospital, but it was not possible as he was unconscious.

The owner of the house, Yarul, and the police said that there was a cow worth approximately one lakh taka and seven goats worth about two and a half lakh taka in his barn. They claim that when Yarul realized that they were being stolen, he screamed and locals came to the spot and arrested the two.

Bagha Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Suprabhat Mondal said that the body of the deceased Shimul has been taken into police custody and sent to the forensic department of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for autopsy. A case has been filed based on the complaint of the house owner Yarul. Legal action regarding the incident is under process.
