Mostafa Kamal, and the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Development) of BMU, Professor Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman Howlader, Dean of the Faculty of Nursing, Professor Dr. Md. Monir Hossain Khan, and Rotarian Khalid Hasan, President of the Rotary Club of Metropolitan Dhaka. The program was moderated by Assistant Professor of the Department of Anesthesia Analgesia and Intensive Care Medicine Dr. Md. Hasnul Alam, and was attended by Head of the Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine Division Professor Dr. AKM Akhtaruzzaman, Surgical Oncologist Dr. Md. Jahangir Hossain, Professor of the Department of Anesthesia Dr. Mantosh Kumar Mondal, Professor Dr. Dilip Kumar Bhowmik, Assistant Professor Dr. Refayet Ullah Siddique, Assistant Professor Dr. Taj Uddin Ahmed, and other respected teachers, physicians, resident students, and nurses of the department. Speaking as the chief guest, Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh Medical University Professor FM Siddiqui said that the training period of the Critical Care Nursing Training Program will be longer and all kinds of support will be provided by the BMU administration for its modernization. The quality of medical service and medical management of a hospital depends on the doctors and nurses. The need for trained and skilled nursing services is essential in the service of dying patients. Every moment of nursing service is important here. Such training programs will be continued as per the needs of patients. There is also a plan to introduce OT in evening and night shifts at BMUE. Then more such trained nurses will be required. He also said that effective initiatives have been taken to add all kinds of equipment rich in the world’s updated technology to every department at Bangladesh Medical University.
In his speech as a special guest, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Development) Professor Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman Howlader said, Nursing is a highly skilled and noble profession in the world. The BMU administration is working to ensure that nurses can provide their best in serving patients through knowledge, training and skill acquisition. I have seen abroad, for example, in Australia, nurses run hospitals. Nurses implement the instructions given by doctors. Rotarian Khalid Hasan, President of Rotary Club of Metropolitan Dhaka, said that Rotary Club of Metropolitan Dhaka has previously supported the establishment of the Palliative Medicine Department at BMU. The Rotary Club’s support for the Critical Care Nursing Training Program will continue. Chairman of the Department of Anesthesia, Analgesia and Intensive Care Medicine and Honorable Registrar of BMU, Professor Dr. Md. Mostafa Kamal, in his presiding speech, mentioned the need of the hour to take forward the three subjects of anesthesia, critical care and nursing in an integrated manner and said, Anesthesia, Analgesia and Intensive Care Medicine is the most comprehensive department among the 56 departments of Bangladesh Medical University, a department that is progressive in terms of manpower and scope of work. Once started as a method of anesthesia only in surgery, this department is now an important foundation for pre-operative care, pain medicine, critical care, emergency care, resuscitation. This department, which supports various departments of the Surgical Faculty, now directly supports 34 departments of the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Nursing, Dental Faculty and Faculty of Basic Science. Once there were 8 OTs in C-Block alone, now the number of OTs in different blocks is 48. In addition, 3 ICU HDUs with 52 beds, 4 to 5 post-operative wards with 50 to 60 beds and 1 pain clinic with OT are operated under this department. Professor Dr. Md. Mostafa Kamal, Chairman of the Department of Anesthesia Analgesia and Intensive Care Medicine, said, it is necessary to quickly purchase 15 anesthesia machines, take measures to purchase monitors and other equipment including mechanical ventilation in the ICU, and take measures to purchase MRI and USG and other equipment for pain medicine. It is also important to quickly increase the manpower to implement the decision to introduce evening OT at BMU. It is important to establish a virtual anesthesia skill lab and data capturing network to keep pace with the entire world of health systems. Registrar of BMU, Professor Dr. Md. Mostafa Kamal said, currently there are 7 divisions in the Department of Anesthesia, namely – General Anesthesia, Neuro Anesthesia, Pediatric Anesthesia, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia, Transplant Anesthesia, Pain Medicine and ICU. In order to coordinate the administrative, academic, clinical and research activities of this rapidly growing department, it is necessary to establish a new faculty on Anesthesia, Intensive Care Services and Allied Disciplines for the development of this university and the needs of the patients of the country, which is the demand of the time.
