Unilever Bangladesh Limited (UBL) , one of the country’s leading manufacturers and marketers of daily necessities and consumer goods, jointly organized a special awareness program at Pahartali Girls’ School and College in Chittagong, in collaboration with Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) and Young Power in Social Action (YPSA).

The aim of the program was to make students aware of plastic waste management. Since 2022, these three organizations have been working to improve plastic waste management in the Chittagong City Corporation area. The program is part of this ongoing initiative.

Under this initiative, three-colored waste segregation bins have been installed in 111 schools and madrasas of Chittagong City Corporation so far. As a result, students are getting the opportunity to acquire basic knowledge of waste segregation according to the type and practice this habit in their daily lives. It has been possible to reach 11,500 students of schools and madrasas through awareness activities. In addition, workshops and awareness activities are also being organized involving teachers and students of various universities.

In addition , teachers and students are provided with regular training and necessary support so that they can spread the message of plastic waste management among their families , friends and neighbors, thereby emphasizing positive behavioral changes in the larger community.

The event organized at Pahartali Girls School and College was attended by Ruhul Quddus Khan , CEO and Managing Director (MD) of Unilever Bangladesh , SM Tarek Saifullah, Factory Director of Unilever Bangladesh Limited, and Dr. Md. Arifur Rahman, Founder and CEO of Young Power in Social Action (YPSA), along with officials of related organizations.

In a discussion with the students at the event, Ruhul Quddus Khan highlighted the harmful effects of plastic waste and the need for proper plastic waste management. He encouraged the students to develop habits such as disposing of plastic waste at designated places , reducing plastic usage , segregating waste, and participating in cleanliness activities.

In addition to creating awareness in educational institutions , the initiative is also working to strengthen plastic waste collection and management and develop the capacity and safety of people associated with this sector. More than 35,000 tons of plastic waste have been collected so far through this initiative, which is being run in 41 wards of Chittagong city. 3,000 waste workers and 220 scrap dealers have been trained in plastic waste management , health and safety, and basic business skills. About 2,000 waste workers have been provided with safety equipment and 1,827 people have been covered under group insurance. In addition, the message of waste segregation and responsible plastic management has been conveyed to about 28,000 families through door-to-door awareness activities.

Representatives of the organizing organizations said that such activities will continue in the future to encourage future generations to play a more active and responsible role in environmental protection.
