An important meeting of the University Ranking Committee was held at Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) Monday, August 31, 2026. An important meeting of the University Ranking Committee was held at Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) Monday, August 31, 2026. The meeting reviewed the university’s experience of participating in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings for the first time, assessed the progress of ongoing activities, and discussed future work plans. The meeting was attended by the Honorable Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh Medical University, Professor F. M. Siddiqui, as the chief guest. The meeting was presided over by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) Professor Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam. In addition, members of the University Ranking Committee, the concerned chairmen/focal points and focal persons of various departments and representatives of the concerned administrative and academic units were present. Vice-Chancellor Professor F. M. Siddiqui provided valuable feedback and guidance on various aspects of the ranking process. He especially emphasized on increasing the visibility of the university at the international level through effective utilization of the university’s existing research, innovation and electronic medical records (EMR). The chairman of the meeting, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) Professor Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam, directed that a full meeting minutes should be prepared on the issues discussed in today’s meeting. Later, a separate meeting would be organized with the chairmen/focal points and focal persons of various departments. He further directed that a detailed action plan would be prepared in the light of today’s discussion in the next meeting. In this, department-wise and indicator-wise responsibilities, necessary information, time frame and monitoring system would be determined. The meeting presented the current progress and work already done in the ranking process of Bangladesh Medical University. Professor Dr. Faria Hasin, Department of Public Health and Informatics, presented a detailed presentation on the activities completed and ongoing in the first, second and third phases of the ranking process, the experience gained and what further activities can be taken in the future. The presentation highlighted the institutional ranking structure of the university, department-wise focal point and focal person system, ORCID and Google Scholar profiles of teachers, research and publications, electronic medical records (EMR), data collection and verification, capacity building, IT and financial support and various aspects of future ranking preparation. The meeting placed special emphasis on using correct institutional affiliation. The need to properly preserve the research profiles and institutional identities of teachers was highlighted as there is an opportunity to automatically collect research and publication information from international databases like Scopus and PubMed. In order to further strengthen the internationalization of the university, emphasis was placed on increasing international students, international teachers, teacher-student exchanges and international research collaboration. Noting that BMU has various research and innovation activities, discussions were held on identifying patentable innovations and taking initiatives in the appropriate process. Emphasis was placed on building an effective institutional framework by linking research and innovation with patents, technology transfer and industrial collaboration. The meeting appreciated the cooperation of IT Cell, Finance Department, Library and related departments. Emphasis was placed on further integrating the collection, storage and management of ranking-related information. The meeting also discussed the lessons learned from the experience of participating in international rankings for the first time. In the future, emphasis was placed on collecting, verifying and storing ranking-related information continuously throughout the year instead of collecting information at the last minute. The learned discussants in the meeting expressed their determination to further strengthen research excellence, internationalization, innovation, industry collaboration and institutional information management in order to achieve a stronger position in international rankings in the future.
