BMU’s Shaheed Dr. Milton Hall held a democracy rally and discussion titled ‘July 36: Commitment to Democracy in the Spirit of Nationalism’ on Wednesday, August 19, 2026. Vice Chancellor of BMU, Professor Dr. FM Siddiqui was present as the chief guest. Convener of Movement for Justice-BMU, Dr. Muha. Shahidul Haque Rahat presided over the event. Movement for Justice-BMU Member Secretary Dr. Muhammad Zafar Iqbal moderated the event, and Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Development) Professor Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman Howlader, Treasurer Professor Dr. Nahrin Akhtar, Proctor Professor Dr. Sheikh Farhad were special guests. In addition, a video documentary and photo exhibition on related issues was organized by the initiative of Movement for Justice-BMU. In his speech as the chief guest, Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. FM Siddiqui said that due to the July Uprising, the country has been freed from the fascist regime. People are able to speak freely and independently. The July spirit must always be kept awake. The country must not fall into the clutches of fascism again. Everyone must be united and confront fascism. In his speech, the Vice Chancellor highlighted the long history of Bangladesh’s democracy being repeatedly obstructed and mentioned the contributions of martyred President Ziaur Rahman, former Prime Minister and uncompromising leader Late Begum Khaleda Zia and Honorable Prime Minister Mr. Tarique Rahman in establishing democracy. The Vice Chancellor ordered the publication of a white paper on the injustice and corruption committed during the previous fascist government at Bangladesh Medical University and urged to take legal action accordingly. In his speech, he urged everyone working here to treat the patients who come to BMU for treatment well and at the same time ensure that they get the highest quality medical services. The Vice Chancellor also said in his speech that there have been many conspiracies to destroy the nationalist spirit in Bangladesh time and again, but due to the faith and love of the people of the country, those conspiracies have been foiled and finally the victory of nationalism has been assured, we must remain united and maintain this victory. Treasurer of BMU, Professor Dr. Nahrin Akhtar said, the July Uprising was successful because people from all walks of life were united. Everyone still needs to be united and take the country forward by keeping the spirit of the July Uprising in mind. He said, the current government has increased the budget in the health sector, with the sole aim of bringing healthcare to the doorsteps of the people of the country. Everyone working at BMU should also take care that no patient coming to BMU for treatment is deprived of medical services. Proctor of BMU, Professor Dr. Sheikh Farhad said, “Everyone must continue to work to establish an honest, just, humane and democratic Bangladesh. We must also work to build a non-discriminatory state. Those who attacked democracy-loving people at Bangladesh Medical University before August 5, 2024, by joining fascism, must be brought under the law and punished.” Convener of Movement for Justice-BMU and president of today’s event, Dr. Muha. Shahidul Haque Rahat, in his speech, called for being vigilant and united in confronting fascism and ensuring that fascists do not destabilize the country.

Movement for Justice-BMU Member Secretary Dr. Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, in his speech, demanded the establishment of a July memorial on the BMU campus. In her speech, Deputy Registrar Sabina Yasmin said that to ensure that the enemies of fascism cannot flourish on the Bangladesh Medical University campus, Strong demands were made to the university administration.
