A University Central Seminar on Combating Oral Cancer: Perspectives Surgical Advances and Therapeutic Innovations was held at the A Block Auditorium of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) on Monday, July 20, 2026. Various topics including early detection of the disease, various advances in oral cancer treatment, disease prevention, implementation of multidisciplinary approach were discussed in detail. The chief guest of this important seminar was the Vice-Chancellor of BMU, Professor Dr. FM Siddiqui. Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. FM Siddiqui in his speech mentioned that such seminars will make a great contribution to the advance technology and new innovative oral cancer treatment. The guest of honor in this important seminar was Professor Dr. Ahmed Nadeem Abbasi, Department of Oncology, Aga Khan University, Pakistan. In his speech, the Vice Chancellor recalled his visit to Aga Khan University, Pakistan in 2004 and praised the quality of education, research and medical services of the institution. Both sides expressed hope that mutual cooperation in education, training, research and cancer treatment between Bangladesh Medical University and Aga Khan University will be further strengthened in the future. In his speech as a special guest, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Development) Professor Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman Howlader, termed oral cancer as a threat to public health and a social burden and emphasized the need to increase public awareness and ensure the latest treatment for this disease along with disease prevention. He mentioned that Human Papilloma Virus is also a cause of oral cancer. BMU’s Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Professor Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam, Treasurer Professor Dr. Nahrin Akhtar, Registrar Professor Dr. Md. Mostafa Kamal, among others, were also present as special guests at the seminar. In the seminar, Professor Dr. Syed Md. Akram Hossain, Chairman of the Department of Clinical Oncology, Bangladesh Medical University, presented a paper titled “Modern Treatment of Oral Cancer: Experience and Progress of Bangladesh Medical University. He gave a presentation titled “Therapeutic Management of Oral Cancer: Current Standards and Innovations.” In it, he highlighted the progress of integrated cancer treatment services available at the university, including modern radiotherapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy. Professor Dr. Mahmuda Akhter, Chairman of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, presented a paper on ‘Epidemiology and Contemporary Perspectives of Oral Cancer in Bangladesh’. Professor Dr. Mahmuda Akhter said that oral cancer is a major public health risk in the Southeast Asian region. The mortality rate of people affected by this disease is also high. Bangladesh is considered the most vulnerable country for oral cancer. Widespread use of betel, lime, white leaf, zarda, guava and cigarettes, malnutrition and delay in diagnosis have been identified as the main causes of oral cancer. He said that it is possible to reduce the number of oral cancer patients in Bangladesh by regularly conducting oral examinations, increasing public awareness and adopting methods of quitting tobacco, leading a healthy lifestyle and early detection. Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry and Associate Professor of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Sakhawat Hossain Sayant presented a paper on Surgical Management of Oral Cancer: Current Standards and Innovations. In his paper, he highlighted the need for multidisciplinary and evidence-based treatment, virtual surgical planning, surgery using modern technologies including AI, complete tumor resection with appropriate oncologic margins in the treatment of oral squamous cell carcinoma, and various modern treatment aspects. Dr. Ahmed Nadeem Abbasi, Professor of the Department of Oncology, Aga Khan University, Pakistan, is visiting Bangladesh Medical University for the second time as an external examiner in the MD examination of the Department of Clinical Oncology. In his speech as the honored guest, he praised the significant improvement in the education, training, examination system, online education and e-learning activities of the department compared to the last time and said that under the leadership of the current Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. FM Siddiqui, Bangladesh Medical University and the Department of Clinical Oncology under the supervision of Professor Syed Akram Hossain, will move forward further in the future and expressed hope for increased cooperation between the Aga Khan University and BMU.
