Pond digging has not stopped even after the administration took action. About a decade ago, ponds were dug in some low-lying areas of the upazila’s Silmaria union and fish farming was started. At that time, these low-lying areas were one-crop. Therefore, since they could not make a profit from crops, they resorted to fish farming. Currently, pond digging is going on in three-crop land. In this upazila, the amount of cultivable land is decreasing every year due to the excavation of ponds by excavators. The area’s intelligentsia is of the opinion that this will drastically reduce the amount of cropland by the end of the year. Since Puthia Upazila is an agricultural district, various types of crops including paddy, jute, sugarcane, potatoes, brinjal, garlic, onion and other fruits are produced. These crops are sold to meet the needs of the area and sold to other parts of the country. If ponds are excavated in this way, a food crisis will soon arise. It will also have an impact on the entire country. However, Puthia Upazila Agriculture Officer Smriti Rani admitted that agricultural land is decreasing. However, she said that they do not have any accurate information about the amount of agricultural land that has been lost. Not only is agricultural land being damaged, but the movement of soil-carrying tractors is also causing extensive damage to roads and highways. The officials concerned said, “We have imposed jail terms and fines on pond diggers and confiscated or rendered useless the excavators used for pond digging, but pond digging has not decreased. If this situation continues, the production of rice and other crops in this upazila will decrease in the future.” Mominul Haque of the upazila’s Shilmaria union said that pond digging is going on in several places in the upazila’s Shilmaria union in defiance of government ban. In addition, pond digging is going on by cutting down the Ama Bagan of Jiupara. The soil from these ponds is going to the brick kiln. In addition, many people are contacting the tractors carrying soil and buying soil for 800 to 1000 taka. The tractors carrying soil are seen being driven by underage drivers who do not have a driving license or valid driving documents. As a result of these pond digging, waterlogging has occurred in several beels of the upazila. Due to the permanent waterlogging of low-lying land, landowners are forced to give land for pond digging. Currently, pond diggers are avoiding daylight and digging ponds at night.” So that ponds can be dug without the administration’s knowledge. In this regard, Puthia Upazila Executive Officer Liakat Salman said, “A drive is being conducted as soon as the news of pond digging is received. So far, several people have been fined through mobile courts. In addition, several escrows used for pond digging have been seized and destroyed. Basically, a group of middlemen is encouraging farmers to dig ponds by taking all the responsibilities of the farmers,” the official said.
