The convening committee of “Dheu”, a social organization for the protection of rivers and water bodies, has been formed.

The decision was taken at a discussion meeting of Madhyapara Maheshwari Dighirpare Dheu on Saturday, July 18 at 5 pm. The convener of the organization is Sohel Ahad and member secretary Aifat Islam were announced. Joint convener (1) Ali Akram Khandaker Swapan, joint convener (2) Aminul Islam Ahad and joint convener (3) Hira Ahmed Zakir. Other members include Mominul Haque Rubel, Sanaul Haque, Khokon Mia, Bashir Ahmed, Fazal Bhuiyan, Dulal Ahmed, Kausar Ahmed, Ahsan Habib Zakaria and Md. Zahir Ullah, among others.

Seven demands were raised in the discussion meeting. The demands include 1. Restoration of 26 canals (including the town canal) from the Titas River source museum to Medda crematorium in Brahmanbaria city, 2. Demarcation of both sides of the town canal, de-encroachment, beautification and ensuring a suitable environment for navigation, 3. Conservation of 212 ponds in the city, including the municipality’s own 10 ponds, and inclusion in the government gazette, 4. Widening of both sides of the road from Kautali intersection to Medda bus stand to Ghatura intersection, 5. Demolishing all the markets built on the canal by the district council and restoring the canal to its previous normal form, 6. Construction of a modern children’s amusement park on the site of the abandoned old jail in Brahmanbaria city with the aim of building a child-friendly city, and 7. Taking effective measures to stop the use of hydraulic horns of battery-operated rickshaws to reduce traffic congestion and noise pollution in the city.

Expressing their commitment to work together by giving importance to the 7 demands raised by the wave to enhance the beauty of the city, the leaders of the organization said, “Rivers, water bodies, environment and child protection are fundamental human rights. If the rivers and water bodies are saved, the environment will be saved, and if the environment is saved, children will be protected.” The leaders of the wave organization have strongly demanded that the municipal authorities remove the silt accumulated in the city’s 120-kilometer drain, remove the unwanted dustbins at various points in the city, and arrange for the collection of garbage in vans in the neighborhoods.
