A field day on the dissemination of improved taro varieties was held on 16 July 2026 at Torotpora village under Sadar Upazila of Gazipur district under the Strengthening Tuber Crops Research Project. The chief guest at the event was Dr. Md. Mosharraf Hossain Molla, Director (Service and Supply) of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI). In his address, he said that although various types of taro are cultivated across the country, BARI has so far developed nine improved taro varieties. These varieties are free from throat irritation, cook evenly and easily, and provide higher yields. He also noted that during the rainy season, when the availability of other vegetables declines, taro stolons (kochur loti) and other taro crops play a significant role in meeting the country’s vegetable demand.
The special guest, Dr. Md. Shamsul Alam, Chief Scientific Officer of the centre, said that taro stolons have become a highly popular vegetable among consumers from all segments of society. He added that nearly one-fourth of the country’s total taro production consists of taro stolons.
The programme was chaired by Dr. Md. Khorshed Alam, Project Director of the Strengthening Tuber Crops Research Project. In his presidential remarks, he said that taro is an iron-rich and nutritious crop, and taro stolons play an important role in helping prevent anaemia.
The event was also attended by Dr. Ferdousi Begum, Senior Scientific Officer of the centre, along with local farmers, agricultural extension personnel, and other concerned officials.
