A joint operation team of RAB-9 and RAB-10 has arrested Nabinagar’s top terrorist and notorious robber Shafiq, accused of armed attacks on RAB detectives, torturing them while they were detained and spreading the video on social media, from Kamrangirchar in the capital Dhaka. RAB claims that Shafiq, an accused in more than 15 cases including murder, robbery, rape, drugs, extortion and pornography, had been conducting terrorist activities in the area for a long time.
This information was given in a press release signed by Additional Superintendent of Police Md. Nur Nabi, Company Commander of RAB-9, CPC-1, Brahmanbaria on Monday (July 13).
RAB said that on May 11, when four intelligence members of RAB-9 and CPC-1 went to Khagatua area of Nabinagar in Brahmanbaria to collect information, Shafiq Dakat and his associates launched an armed ambush on them. Later, the four members were detained for about three hours and inhumanly tortured. Upon receiving information, they were rescued with the help of additional RAB members and locals and admitted to Nabinagar Upazila Health Complex.
Constable Malek sustained serious head injuries in the attack. Havildar Rashed’s right arm and Constable Kajal’s left arm were broken. The injured were later sent to Pangu Hospital in Dhaka for advanced treatment.
Immediately after the incident, RAB-9 launched a massive operation. Although five people were arrested in the first round and four more in the next operation, Shafiq the robber managed to escape each time. After about two months, his location was identified through a bKash account. Later, at around 12:20 am on Sunday, a joint team of RAB-9 and RAB-10 raided a house in Shaheed Kawsar Road area of Jhaulahati under Kamrangirchar Police Station in the capital and arrested him.
During the initial interrogation, Shafiq said that on the day of the incident, after an attack on an opponent’s house, he and his associates were staying at Abdul Qadir Miah’s house. At that time, upon receiving news that RAB was coming for an operation, they prepared and later attacked the RAB members. After the attack, the members were detained and tortured, and the video was recorded and spread on social media to undermine the morale of RAB.
According to RAB, Shafiq’s group had previously attacked the Nabinagar police station and RAB three times. Three separate cases have been filed at Nabinagar police station in these incidents. In addition, Shafiq, who is accused in more than 15 cases including murder, robbery, theft, extortion, encroachment, drug trafficking, rape and pornography, started his journey in the criminal world by stealing, but later became known as a dangerous terrorist in the area. RAB has claimed that no one would have dared to protest even if he committed robberies in broad daylight due to fear of him.
RAB said that legal proceedings are underway against the arrested robber Shafiq. At the same time, the operation to arrest his accomplices will continue.
