Serious allegations have been raised against Arif Mohammad Dulal, the head teacher of the historic Shaheed Ali Model High School in Shalla Upazila, Sunamganj, for allegedly cutting and removing 13 valuable trees belonging to the school without following government regulations or obtaining approval from the relevant authorities. According to the allegations, the trees, valued at several hundred thousand taka, were removed without any tender process or official permission.
On the evening of July 10, acting on a confidential tip, this correspondent visited the premises of Shaheed Ali Model High School and witnessed the transportation of the felled trees. Several large trees, which had reportedly been cut some time earlier, were being loaded onto a large tractor by Mofiz, son of Nur Mia of the Muslim Para in Ghungiargaon, along with four to five other workers.
When questioned about the transportation of the timber, Mofiz stated that they were taking the trees to a sawmill on the instructions of the school’s head teacher, Arif Mohammad Dulal. Later, at Mofiz’s residence in Muslim Para, the same large logs were found stacked in front of his house.
According to local sources, this is not the first such incident involving the school’s trees. Abdul Mannan, son of the school’s founder, Haji Sanjib Ali, alleged that the head teacher had previously cut several valuable trees belonging to the school and used the timber to make furniture for his personal use. He claimed that the head teacher disregards school regulations and uses school property at his own discretion without obtaining permission from anyone.
Repeated attempts to contact the accused head teacher, Arif Mohammad Dulal, by mobile phone for his comments were unsuccessful, as he did not answer the calls.
Meanwhile, when contacted by phone, the president of Shaheed Ali Model High School, Sirajul Islam Siraj, said that the head teacher had gone to his in-laws’ house and that he had not yet spoken with him. He added, “Where are you now? Let’s discuss the matter in person.”
Shalla Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), Piyas Chandra Das, assured that strict action would be taken if any irregularities were found. He said, “I was not aware of the tree-cutting incident at Shaheed Ali Model High School until now. I have just been informed. I will immediately investigate the matter, verify the facts, and take necessary action.”
The alleged use of school property for personal purposes in violation of government regulations has sparked widespread outrage among local residents and parents. They have demanded a prompt and impartial investigation, followed by appropriate legal and administrative action if the allegations are proven true.
