The official inauguration ceremony of the Bangladesh Chapter of the International Papillomavirus Society (IPBS) was held on Monday, June 29, 2026, at Lecture Room-507 of the Super Specialized Hospital of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) to further strengthen national and global efforts in prevention, research, education and elimination of cervical cancer related to Human Papillomavirus (HPV). The chapter officially began its journey with a ceremony organized at Lecture Room-507 of the Super Specialized Hospital of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) on Monday. The chief guest of the event was the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) of Bangladesh Medical University, Professor Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad. The special guests were the Honorable Additional Secretary (Development) of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Syeda Nowshin Parveen, Former Vice Chancellor of BMU, Professor Dr. Nazrul Islam, Honorable Treasurer of BMU, Professor Dr. Nahrin Akhtar and many others. The event was presided over by the Lead Professor of IPVS Bangladesh Chapter, Dr. Ashrafunnesa and Professor Dr. Kamrun Nahar. In his speech as the chief guest, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) of Bangladesh Medical University, Professor Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad wished the success of the Bangladesh Chapter of the International Papillomavirus Society (IPBS). He said, the death rate in cervical cancer is very high. There is no alternative to vaccination to prevent human papillomavirus HPV and cervical cancer. The HPV problem has now become a cause of concern for human health. Former Vice-Chancellor of BMU, Professor Dr. Nazrul Islam said that implementing the mission of the Bangladesh Chapter of the International Papillomavirus Society (IPBS) is not an easy task, and it requires strong determination to make it a reality. Treasurer of BMU, Professor Dr. Nahrin Akhtar said, “Primary preventive activities, screening, vaccination are very important to prevent diseases related to Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). To implement these issues, pathologists, virologists, physicians, health workers, the Ministry of Health, medical universities and healthcare institutions, researchers, and all concerned must work together in a unified and coordinated manner.” Dr. Lutfa Begum Lipi, Coordinator of IPVS Bangladesh Chapter, delivered the welcome speech. She said that the establishment of this chapter in Bangladesh is an important milestone in preventing HPV infection, controlling cervical cancer, expanding research, and increasing cooperation at the national and international levels. Professor Ashrafunnesa presented an article on the role and objectives of the Bangladesh Chapter. In her speech, she mentioned that the approval to form the Bangladesh Chapter was granted after Ghana, Nigeria and Nepal in recognition of the membership of Bangladesh in IPVS and the active role of its members at the international level. Professor Dr. Kamrun Nahar presented the proposed work plan of the Bangladesh Chapter for the next one year and called for membership of the chapter. Grant School of Public Health, BRAC University Dr. Laura Reichenbach, President of GOSB Professor Sabera Khatun, President of BDS C CP Professor Shirin Akhter Begum and Immediate Past President of International Papillomavirus Society (IPBS) Professor Suzanne Garland were present as special guests at the event along with eminent physicians, researchers and public health experts of the country. The speakers highlighted the importance of HPV vaccination, HPV-based screening, research, awareness raising and multi-dimensional partnerships in achieving the goals of the World Health Organization’s cancer elimination program. They expressed hope that the IPVS Bangladesh Chapter will build effective coordination among scientists, physicians, researchers and policymakers in the country and open new horizons in the prevention of HPV-related diseases. The event expressed hope that the IPVS Bangladesh Chapter will play a supportive role in future research collaboration, scientific knowledge exchange, training, raising public awareness, and evidence-based policy formulation at the national level. After everyone’s speeches, the IPVS Bangladesh Chapter was officially inaugurated by cutting a cake and releasing balloons. At the end of the event, the guests pledged to strengthen coordinated efforts to eliminate cervical cancer and reiterated their commitment to further accelerate HPV prevention activities in Bangladesh.
