Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) arrested 3,217 suspects and registered 1,454 cases during the first six months of 2026, reflecting what the force described as significant progress in crime prevention and law enforcement across the metropolitan area.
Presenting the six-month performance report at a press briefing held at the GMP Headquarters on Tuesday, Commissioner Md. Israil Howlader said public participation remains the cornerstone of effective policing and credited community engagement for the force’s operational success.
According to the report, the registered cases included 20 murders, seven robberies, 28 snatching incidents, and 176 cases involving violence against women and children. Special operations led to the arrest of 46 snatchers, 23 robbers, while 354 suspects were apprehended during preparations for robbery.
The Commissioner said GMP continued its zero-tolerance campaign against narcotics, bringing 988 drug traffickers and 901 drug users under legal action. During anti-drug drives, police seized 51,560 yaba tablets, 357 kilograms of cannabis, 1.965 kilograms of heroin, 530 pethidine injections, and 46 litres of locally produced liquor. Authorities also filed 812 narcotics cases and 60 arms cases during the reporting period.
In separate operations, police recovered 10 illegal firearms, 20 rounds of ammunition, four magazines, and a large cache of locally made weapons, further strengthening efforts to curb organised crime.
Addressing recent security concerns, the GMP chief said police had taken a firm stance against flash processions and acts of sabotage allegedly linked to the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League and Awami League. Seven cases were filed over incidents on June 21 and July 3, leading to the arrest of 15 suspects, while efforts are ongoing to identify more than a hundred others.
The Commissioner also said 18 people were arrested during operations targeting attempts to establish dominance over the jhut (industrial scrap) business in the Tongi East Police Station area.
Reaffirming GMP’s commitment to combating narcotics and juvenile crime, he said regular combing operations are being conducted in crime-prone areas, including Mazar Basti, Keranir Tek, and Ershad Nagar in Tongi. Investigations into the illegal assets of leading drug traffickers have also begun, while the preparation of an updated database of juvenile gang members is nearing completion.
Highlighting the growing use of technology in policing, the Commissioner said incidents of kidnapping and “honey trap” crimes had declined significantly. Of the 20 unidentified bodies recovered during the six-month period, 19 were successfully identified through technological support.
The briefing was attended by Additional Police Commissioner (Administration and Finance) Md. Taherrul Haque Chowhan, Additional Police Commissioner (Crime) Md. Belayet Hossain, deputy police commissioners, senior GMP officials, and journalists from various print and electronic media outlets.
Concluding the briefing, Commissioner Howlader reaffirmed GMP’s commitment to maintaining public safety through professional and accountable policing and urged citizens to continue cooperating with law enforcement agencies in preserving peace and order across the metropolitan area.
