Grandmother dies after being hit by grandson’s toothpick in Gaibandha

Grandmother Feroza Begum (60) was killed when her grandson Shakil Ahmed (22) hit her with a saw in Saghata, Gaibandha. Grandfather Abdul Karim (70) was seriously injured in the incident. After the incident, the locals arrested the accused Shakil and handed him over to the police.

The incident took place on Wednesday (July 1) afternoon in Khamar Pabantair village of Ghuridaha union of Saghata upazila. The accused Shakil is the son of Rafiqul Islam of Khamar Pabantair village and the grandson of Abdul Karim. The deceased Feroza Begum is the second wife of the injured Abdul Karim (Vetur).

Police and locals said that Shakil had been a drug addict for a long time. Due to his drug use, his wife left for her father’s house in disgrace. On Wednesday (July 1) afternoon, Shakil had an argument with his grandparents while working in the jute field next to the house over the issue of bringing his wife back. At one point, Shakil got angry and hit the grandparents randomly with a sharp knife.

The elderly couple fell to the ground in a bloody state. Local people rushed to their rescue after hearing their screams. Later, the police rescued them and took them to the Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor on duty referred them to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogra. Later, Feroza Begum died on the way there. The injured Abdul Karim was admitted to the hospital. Meanwhile, after the incident, the locals arrested Shakil and handed him over to the police.

Saghata Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mahabub Alam confirmed the matter and said that upon receiving the information, the police arrested the accused Shakil from the spot. The subsequent legal process of the incident is ongoing.
