Naogaon District Police has launched a massive operation to unravel the mystery of two high-profile incidents of fraud, chemical spraying and alleged “devil’s breath” targeting elderly people in Naogaon city. Under the direction of the Superintendent of Police, a simultaneous operation was conducted in 9 hotels in the city late at night and a total of 5 people, including 4 members of the fraud ring, were arrested. Police said that two separate fraud incidents occurred on the same day in the Naogaon Sadar area on June 23 .

In the first incident, an elderly woman named Fatema Begum (70) was knocked unconscious by unknown persons using a chemical substance or so-called “devil’s breath” in front of the Naogaon Mishtanna Bhandar in the Churipatti area of ​​Naogaon town at around 11:30 am. Later, they tricked her into a rickshaw and fled with the gold chain, earrings and 5,000 taka in cash on her body. Locals rescued her and admitted her to Naogaon Sadar Hospital. When her condition deteriorated, she was taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. She died there on June 25 while undergoing treatment.

In a second incident on the same afternoon, an elderly couple was duped by the men in the area between Dhaka Bus Stand and Liton Bridge, promising them gold bars. The men allegedly hypnotized them by applying a chemical spray and snatched away a pair of gold earrings weighing 6 annas.

Two separate cases were filed at Naogaon Sadar Model Police Station in these two incidents. Considering the importance of the matter, a special investigation team was formed under the direction of Naogaon Superintendent of Police Mohammad Tariqul Islam, comprising the Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime), the Officer-in-Charge of Sadar Model Police Station and the District Detective Branch.

In continuation of this, a simultaneous raid was conducted at various places including 9 hotels in Naogaon city on the late night of June 27 under the leadership of Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Asaduzzaman.

Abdul Hai, Ershad Ali and Bablu of Gaibandha and Kalam of Nawabganj Upazila of Dinajpur were arrested in the operation from Naogaon Rest House Hotel and various areas of the city.

During police interrogation, the arrested persons admitted that they, along with a few other accomplices, had snatched gold earrings from an elderly couple in the Dhaka Bus Stand area by luring them with gold bars and hypnotizing them.

The investigation further revealed that the stolen earrings were sold to Md. Jahangir, the manager of Muhib Jewelers in Naogaon Swarnapatti. Later, during interrogation by the district detective police, Jahangir confessed to buying the stolen gold. Based on the information he provided, 4 annas of gold was recovered in melted form. Police said that there is information against Jahangir that he was involved in buying and selling stolen gold in the past.

Police said the arrested accused said the remaining gold ornaments and cash are with their absconding accomplices. Operations are ongoing to arrest the other accused and the absconding accused involved in the first incident and recover the remaining goods.
