BNP leader Advocate Mintu, 6 others granted bail in ‘false’ case in Jessore Sharsha

Six people, including senior joint general secretary of Jessore’s Sharsha Upazila BNP and learned lawyer Advocate Mustafa Kamal Mintu, have been granted bail in a ‘false and conspiratorial’ case. On Wednesday afternoon, Jessore Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (Sharsha Amli Court) Judge Ashadul Islam granted the bail order after hearing both sides.

According to the case and local sources, on May 29, at around 4:15 pm, a fight broke out between two youths named Titone and Pintu, a former Chhatra League leader who was on local leave and policeman Mamun Hasan Jewel, who had been given a job under the Awami League quota, in front of Habib’s tea shop adjacent to Shyamlagachhi Gate in Sharsha Upazila. Upon learning of the incident, the tea shop owner Habib immediately informed former UP member and BNP leader Advocate Mostafa Kamal Mintu about the matter.

Upon receiving the news, Advocate Mintu quickly arrived at the scene and, after talking to the District Superintendent of Police (SP), brokered a peaceful settlement between the two parties.

Locals said that although the matter was resolved after the incident, on the same day, a person named Abdul Barik, the brother of the elder martyr of Kanyadaha village, filed a general diary (GD) with Sharsha police station as a complainant. There was no allegation against Advocate Mustafa Kamal Mintu in that GD.

But 5 days after the GD was filed, a joint team of the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sharsha Police Station and DB Police conducted a raid in Shyamlagachhi village to arrest Advocate Mintu. At that time, the public present asked the police to show the reason for the arrest and the warrant or a copy of the case report, but the police failed to show them. At one stage, the law enforcement forces were forced to return from there in the face of strong protests from the local people.

Following this incident, on the night of June 4, policeman Jewel’s brother, Chhatra League leader Mehedi Hasan Royal, along with Baro Shaheed, filed a new case with Sharsha Police Station (Case No. 4, Date: 04/06/2026). In this case, a total of 6 people, including Advocate Mostafa Kamal Mintu, were named as the first accused. The lawyers claimed that the matter was completely ‘purposeful and ridiculous’ as there were separate plaintiffs in the same incident and a new case was filed after the GD.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday morning, two important witnesses in the case, Maruf Hossain and Monir Hossain, appeared at the Notary Public’s office and executed an affidavit. In the affidavit, they mentioned that the first accused, Advocate Mostafa Kamal Mintu, was not present at the scene of the incident and he was not involved in this incident in any way. Even as witnesses, we ourselves were not present there at the time of the incident.

Later, the defense lawyers presented the affidavits of the witnesses and the inconsistencies in the case before the court. After a long hearing, the learned judge, considering the truth of the incident, granted bail to all the accused in the case, including Advocate Mustafa Kamal Mintu. The defense lawyers called the verdict a ‘victory of justice’.
