Severe river erosion has begun at various places along the Teesta, Karatoya and Brakshaputra rivers in Gaibandha. Hundreds of bighas of farmland and residential areas are being lost due to continuous river erosion, thousands of residents of the riverbanks of these areas have been living in fear of losing their homes. It is known that for the past one month, the water level of all the rivers in Gaibandha district has been rising and falling, and with the rise and fall of the water level, severe erosion has started in the riverbank areas.

The victim of the erosion is Rahima Begum, wife of the deceased Matiar Rahman of the Shokher Bazar area of ​​Belka Union in Sundarganj Upazila of Gaibandha. She has a family of 6 including a son and a daughter. She used to have a house on the ground, but she lost everything in the 4 stages of river erosion and took shelter in the Shokher Bazar area of ​​the Uttarkali farm. But again, in a few days of erosion, half of the house, including the current residence, has gone into the river. She has lost everything now.

More than fifty families in the Shokher Bazar area are in the same situation as Rahima Begum. In a span of a month, the homes of about 15 families have been submerged in the river. The homes and agricultural lands of hundreds of families, including schools and mosques, within a radius of about one and a half kilometers of the area are under threat.

Victim of the breach: Rahima Begum said that she had lost everything in the last 4 breaches of the Teesta river and had taken shelter here by begging. But now the river is taking away that place too. Now she is worried about where to go and how to live.

Marjina Begum from the same area said, “A few days ago, my house was washed away by the river due to erosion. Now I work in different places during the day and stay in someone else’s house at night. If we don’t work to protect the river quickly, the area will be swept away by the river.”

Due to the rise and fall of water at the beginning of the monsoon, river erosion has occurred in various areas of Sundarganj upazila on the Teesta River, including Banglabazar, Uttarkali Khamar, West Ujan Teora, Charitabari, Kapashia, Lalchamar, Current Bazar. Cultivated land and houses are being eroded every day. The people of these areas affected by the erosion are distraught due to the continuous river erosion. The erosion-affected people demand immediate action to prevent the erosion.

Mominur Rahman, a resident of Banglabazar area, said that it is not possible to prevent breakage due to the way people are throwing away the sacks.

Gaibandha Water Development Board Executive Engineer Md. Shariful Islam said that the river is rising and falling, and erosion has started with the rise and fall of water. Initiatives are being taken to identify erosion-prone areas and implement permanent prevention projects, including laying geo bags on an urgent basis to prevent erosion.
