A training workshop on Community-Based Disaster Risk Management, Project Orientation, and the Role of Stakeholders was held in Shalla Upazila of Sunamganj on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at the Upazila Parishad Conference Hall.
The event was organized by CEMRCB, River Project, the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), Aptisa, and BRAC.
The workshop was moderated by Shalla Upazila Engineer Arif Ullah Khan and chaired by Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Piyas Chandra Das. Among the distinguished guests and speakers were Assistant Commissioner (Land) Sayeed Mohammad, Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Debabrata Aich Majumder, Shalla Upazila BNP Convener Sirajul Islam Siraj, Joint Convener Abdul Awal, Former Upazila Chairman Nagendra Chandra Sarkar, SI Shahjahan Mia of Shalla Police Station, and representatives of the River Project including Md. Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury, Shyamlendu Dey, and Abdur Razzaq, along with officials from various government departments.
The workshop focused on disaster risk reduction, community participation, the role of stakeholders in project implementation, and the involvement of local residents in development initiatives.
During his speech, BNP Convener Sirajul Islam Siraj expressed concern over the site selection of the under-construction Ashrayan Project at Pratappur, which is being implemented at a cost of approximately Tk 70 million (7 crore).
He stated, “An Ashrayan Project is being constructed in Pratappur, but local residents were not adequately informed about it. Upon inquiry, I learned that the project is being built only about 100 meters west of the Kalni River. Every year, the area experiences riverbank erosion ranging from 20 to 30 meters. If the project is damaged by erosion even before its completion, who will take responsibility?”
Urging the concerned authorities to take immediate action, he added, “There is still time to reconsider the location and relocate the project to a safer site. Otherwise, the project may face serious risks from future riverbank erosion.”
Speakers at the workshop emphasized the importance of constructing disaster-resilient infrastructure, incorporating public opinion into development planning, and ensuring transparency in project implementation.
