Farmers in Shalla Upazila of Sunamganj have suffered extensive crop damage due to recent heavy rainfall. Farmers in Shalla Upazila of Sunamganj have suffered extensive crop damage due to recent heavy rainfall. Although a list has been prepared to provide government assistance to the affected farmers, allegations of corruption, irregularities, favoritism, and bribery have emerged regarding the beneficiary selection process.
According to the allegations, local residents have accused Bablu Member, a Union Parishad member of Habibpur Union (Ward No. 2), of excluding genuine farmers from the list while including ineligible individuals.
On Monday (June 8) afternoon, angry farmers and local residents, led by former Union Parishad member Subrata Das, organized a protest march toward the office of the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO). However, after being obstructed on the way, they gathered in front of the Habibpur Union Parishad office.
The protesters claimed that the names of genuinely affected farmers had been omitted from the list, while non-farmers and influential individuals had been included. They alleged that as a result, many deserving farmers were being deprived of government assistance.
Meanwhile, allegations have also been raised against Abdul Hai Member of Shalla Union (Ward No. 4), accusing him of including names on the list in exchange for money. Denying the accusations, Abdul Hai Member stated, “The allegations brought against me are completely false and baseless.”
When contacted regarding the allegations, Bablu Member said, “It is not possible to meet everyone’s demands. A certain group is therefore conducting a smear campaign against me.”
Regarding the matter, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Piyas Chandra Das said, “If the name of any genuine farmer has been left out or if any ineligible person has been included in the list, the matter will be verified based on written complaints, and necessary corrections will be made. There is still an opportunity to revise the list if complaints are received.”
Local farmers have demanded a prompt and impartial investigation to finalize the list of genuinely affected farmers and ensure that government assistance is distributed to the rightful beneficiaries.
