Locals searched a bag in an autovan on suspicion of stolen goods from the bridge in Kotalipara, Gopalganj and recovered 10 kg of marijuana. A van driver has been arrested on charges of transporting marijuana in this incident. However, the main accused on a motorcycle fled after sensing the presence of people present at the scene.

The incident took place on Sunday (June 7) morning in the area adjacent to the under-construction bridge in Pinjuri Union of the upazila.

According to police and local sources, the night guard of a bridge under construction in the Fulbari area detained an unoccupied autovan on suspicion of stolen construction materials. At that time, there was a white plastic bag in the van.  When the van driver was questioned about this, he said that a man named Yadul Sikder from Bahirshimul village of Kotalipara in Ghonapara area of ​​Gopalganj had loaded the bag into his autovan and asked him to deliver it to his home.

When the van driver became suspicious, the night guard informed the local village police. Later, the bag was searched in the presence of the village police and locals. At that time, a black trolley bag was found inside the bag. When the trolley bag was opened, a large amount of marijuana wrapped in black polythene came out. Later, on receiving information, the Kotalipara police reached the spot and seized the marijuana.

Van driver Lavlu Munshi (42) has been arrested in this incident. He is the son of Abdul Majid Munshi of Saraidanga village of Tungipara upazila. The police said that the absconding accused Yadul Sikder is the son of Hannan Sheikh of Bahirshimul village of Kotalipara upazila.

Village police member Faruk Sheikh said, “The auto van was seized on suspicion of carrying stolen goods from the bridge. Later, due to inconsistencies in the van driver’s statement, the sack was opened with the locals and inspected. Then, a large amount of marijuana was found inside the trolley bag. After that, the police station was immediately informed.

Subrata Malo, Sub-Inspector (SI) of Kotalipara Police Station, said, “The amount of marijuana recovered is about 10 kg, with an estimated market value of about 2 lakh taka. A case has been filed under the Narcotics Control Act against the arrested Lavlu Munshi and the absconding Yadul Sikder in this incident. Important information related to drug transportation was found during the initial interrogation. Necessary legal action will be taken after verifying this information.

Police said that the operation to arrest the absconding accused is continuing.
